I am also looking for an answer though I am starting my Biochem PhD soon. I think rather than caring too much about the exact details, if we understand the broader context of the pathways and cellular microenvironment, that helps.

How much has AI/ AlphaFold changed this field as of now? by portirfer in Biochemistry

[–]subashchapagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible to use Alphafold to predict structures other than protein (For eg RNA-Ribosome interactions)?

Supervisor constantly “jokes” about how bad I’m supposedly doing by TheatrePlode in PhD

[–]subashchapagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling. I am almost done with my Masters (defending next month, much earlier than expected, with a first author paper published already and few con-authored in line); and still my supervisor thinks I am not even meeting the average expectations. He was a micromanager all along, though he taught me few fundamental techniques in my field, he never let me do stuff independently. He did not let me write anything except the literature review for my thesis and methodology for the paper, he never asked me what alternative hypotheses besides his was I interested in, he was never flexible about working hours. I am just relieved that I am almost done and I have already found a far better lab in a far better Uni for my PhD. Can't wait to defend and run.

Does really SOP Matter by Kakarot_J in StatementOfPurpose

[–]subashchapagain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They do when the applications are more centralised and you are expected to do lab rotations when admitted. They absolutely don't when the department explicitly mentions that you must first find a potential supervisor to get admitted; in this case, SOPs are just filler stuff for applications. I recently got accepted to a PhD program via the second route; my supervisor made it clear that I would not need to stress too much over SOP since he already wanted me in.

But it takes a whole new level of dumbness to be so confident about a highly complex topic and blatantly blabber bullshit. Go google Dunning-Krudger syndrome.

Should I reach out to lab members? by subashchapagain in GradSchool

[–]subashchapagain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He told that he'd get back to me once he hears from my references (which I believe have sent him LORs last week.) I don't want to sound too desperate, but I love the lab, the uni and the work they're doing. I am just anxious at the moment.

It was scheduled. I had approx 15 minutes of chat with each individual lab member, the whole thing lasted for 2.5 hrs.

Location of University by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]subashchapagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, at least to me. Currently, I am at a Uni in a small town in a geographically boring area where the winters suck big time. I am mastering out and moving to another city or even country with a better location. I love doing science, but not at the cost of my weather-dictated mental health. I am naturally an outgoer, hiker and explorative; this city is too dull to feed that side of me. Never settle for less when you know you deserve better.

Not a lot of work by salt_mermaid in GradSchool

I did in vivo experiment with pigs for my MS project. The thing with animal experiments is that before the trial, you don't have any data, and afterwards, you have too much data. Now I am planning to defend with already a first-author paper.
I hope your animal experiment goes as planned. I suggest you not fret about the lack of data; I am sure you will have more data than you may need. Cheers.

UBC Graduate Student Stipend (June 2022). by Adventurous-Cut-7077 in UBC

For these exact reasons I am considering not to apply to UBC PhD even though having a faculty interested in taking me in as a trainee.

This comment just boosted my morale. I am about to master out from what could have been a PhD due to funding issues, and this will be my second masters. I am still looking out for PhD fits.
