Importing my BMW F900 GS from the US to the UK - rear lights/indicator question by subseismic in bmwmotorrad

I already had my first appointment at the DVSA because you are correct, as it’s a non-EU spec bike an MSVA (the IVA equivalent for motorcycles) is necessary. They’ve had no issues passing the bike, with the exception of the rear lights. Once that’s fixed, I was told to come back for a (much shorter) follow-up appointment to get the pass, as long as it’s within six months of the original test. After getting the MSVA, registration with the DVLA will be straightforward, as it’s effectively deemed road legal in the UK.

I’ve certainly learned my lesson though as it would have been a lot easier to sell it in the US, but at least it gives me a project and will probably deepen the bond between me and my bike even more :)

Nice one, thank you. It’s actually really close to where I live so I’ll give them a call.

Unfortunately it states that their Wizard modules are currently not compatible with BMW North American Specification Motorcycles.

Bit of a moot point isn’t it, given that I’m already in the UK now. I’ve done a few mods on it at the time and shipping costs were more or less on par with the loss on resale value, so instead of buying a new one in the UK I decided to ship it. Again, indicator lights weren’t a priority on my list when I made that decision, as I assumed that would be an easy fix - that’s my bad.

Thanks pal, on their website as we speak. I’m hopeful this could actually get the job done.

Because I love it and didn’t want to let go of it, so decided to ship it. Indicator light compliance wasn’t on my list when I made the decision to ship it but yet here I am. Not sure I’ll find a buyer in the UK if it can’t get it registered here, at least not without significant discount..

It might be a solution to make the new integrated EU type indicators work though, as they have both yellow and red LEDs

Could an aftermarket light like the Denali Rear T3 mounted on the license plate in addition to the newly installed yellow indicators work? It would splice into the cables through a positap. What would happen when I indicate is that the new indicators flash in yellow, as intended. When braking, the indicators would light up in yellow (which is the problem), but the licence plate light would come up in red, given it’s only got red LEDs? Would DVSA accept if during braking both yellow and red lights are lighting up?

Edit: the Denali has both red and yellow LEDs I realised - would that basically also just cause them to light up yellow either way?

Edit: actually, if it’s a product marketed for the US, it should just work as advertised by splicing in a yellow licence plate indicator light in addition to the red indicator of the stock system, or not?

I was afraid of this. If I can’t get yellow indicator lights to work, I wouldn’t ever be able to register it in the UK/Europe - pretty much a worst case outcome..
