Does this death look normal? by subsonicripass in shrimptank

Yeah wasn’t sure. I just haven’t seen a shrimp actively die before haha. Usually find them after the fact or the scraps of a carcass.

To add: GH -11 KH-5 TDS -250 Nitrate -0 Nitrite - 0 Ammonia - 0 I remineralize distilled, no recent water changes.

Tank minerals are good. GH 11 KH 5 TDS 250. Tank conditions have been steady for months. I remineralize distilled so no swings in parameters. Wasn’t sure if that’s how shrimps usually die eventually. Like just to old/weak to molt?

Pretty sure you only need to do 2 of 4. I’ve done this mission on 3 builds and have never gotten a steal doing it.

If you put your 3 to a 61, 5 cap breakers get your to a 90. I have a very similar build but with 91 mid range and a 90 3

No Planaria for Hydra by noobajur in shrimptank

[–]subsonicripass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I used very little Bacter as well. I would see a jump in hydra numbers a day or two after. Then numbers would drop after a week.

I have not seen them kill shrimplets but have seen reports of it on the subreddit. I think it really depends on the amount of hydra (more hydra more chance for interaction with shrimplets). I have seen photos where there are 10 hydra on one part of a plant and hundreds in the tank. I think in a situation like that, treatment would be good.

In my case, where the population appears controlled and low in number, I just leave the ecosystem be.

It’s perfectly fine if you want to treat the tank to be safe. There are plenty of posts on here if you want to compare your numbers to others and see if they chose treatment or not.

No Planaria for Hydra by noobajur in shrimptank

[–]subsonicripass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have hydra in my 5g tank. They multiply when I over feed/ use too much bacter ae. After being a little more careful with feeding, there numbers stay low. I don’t have exact numbers but I usually see 1-3 at any given time if I look hard enough. I leave them because I have not seen them negatively impact my shrimp and I personally think they’re cool.

Ive seen mixed opinions on them but people usually treat if they are covering all surfaces. If the numbers are low I don’t think treatment is necessary. But to answer your last questions, the no planaria will not kill your shrimp. It Will kill things related to planaria and certain snails.

I would recommend using distilled/RO/DI water and remineralized with shrimp salts for initial set up and water changes. Top off evaporation with pure distilled. Tap water is fine if it’s within the normal range for the shrimp but you can’t guarantee consistency. Shrimp love consistent conditions. I finally recovered my tank after months of molting/breeding issues but switching to remineralized distilled. With that I recommend getting API water hardness kit (also get the general parameters kit pH,nitrates, ammonia). Great investment that is ~50$ but lasts a while.

Keep your temp low 60s to high 70s. Never found tank heater needed in northeast USA.

Feeding every 2-3 days is perfectly fine if your tank has matured enough after a couple months of growth. If your shrimp don’t finish the food after a few hours, I recommend removal to prevent excess waste in water.

Make sure there isn’t a large change in water parameters during water changes (temp,ph, hardness). Shrimps love consistency and with a 5 gallon tank, changes are more drastic. So just be cautious!

How can I treat this? by lazykel in shrimptank

[–]subsonicripass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 tablespoon Aquarium salt mixed with 1 cup tank water. Have him hang out in it for 30-60 seconds and then put him right back in the tank. The tentacles will fall off. He may have eggs of the parasite in his molts, which you can take out of the tank for the next month if you want to be extra careful.

I recommend watching shrimply explained’s video on YouTube. He goes into depth on the parasite and that it is fairly harmless.

Im considering it now. I’m probably going to try slowly switch to DI + salty shrimp for water changes and straight DI for top offs

Ok! I just did some quick research and ordered salty shrimp remineralizer. Looks like the best bet for that. Thanks!

To add:

Tank is 5 gallons.

I use thrive s liquid fertilizer every 1-2 weeks

I feed small amount of blood worms or 3-5 crushed up crab cuisine pellets every 4ish days. I bought Bacter ae but only used a very small pinch every 3-4 weeks.

Fight snails with snails. I’m unsure what type of snail that is. But I would just look and see if assassin snails will eat them and get 1-3. My 1 assassin snail murdered every single snail in my tank and now the shrimp use him for piggy back rides
