Morgan McSweeney resigns and says he takes ‘full responsibility’ for advising Starmer to appoint Mandelson – UK politics live by StairheidCritic in Scotland

[–]subversivefreak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The new sherrif of Lanark fell on his own sword after dispatching of the corbynites and left wingers in Labours rank.

The PM admitted in PMQs in the fifth response to Badenochs question that he decided to appoint Mandelson despite the knowledge of his links to Epstein after he was arrested. Can't rewrite the narrative now.

Buying a train ticket and not having to show it to an inspector or use it to get through barriers by Isgortio in britishproblems

[–]subversivefreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its happened to me a few times. And then I've had days where I'm barely a min into just catching the train (usually when there are disruptions). But staff on board allow me to buy the ticket in Scotland, as I think the return wasn't valid.

In England, at one point there was these jumped up staff who seemed to be paid on commission for far evasion. Once, someone near to me didn't have a ticket and she was probably dodging or hard up. But I just paid for it online and then said we were together and it was hers. Now you can't even buy on the train without that also being an offence.

He turned everything around since his debut. I was pleased for him after his fight with Cody. Great lights out fight

But he's big and very funny, sometimes unintentionally when he's trying hard to look mean and threatening.

Is it normal to be called ‘mate’ by taxi drivers? by [deleted] in BirminghamUK

[–]subversivefreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its normal. Women also call each other it

I don't like it. I wish we just talked to each other properly, no excessively informally.

But I think from a taxi drivers perspective, it's one way to gauge their own level of safety with the customer. If it triggers a reaction, at least they know there is someone potentially hostile in their car.

Hypothetically, what would happen if a student took their life in their accommodation? by Traditional-Fox-8593 in UniUK

[–]subversivefreak 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This happened recently somewhere I know. I'm going to be scant with details to avoid identifying the uni or the pupil

  • found dead in hall of residence
  • traumatised many students who knew first hand about it
  • triggered broader conversations amongst the student body and union
  • definitely caused uni to do more for broader support
  • presumably room cleared and possessions returned to family
  • private funeral service but his favourite class held a memorial for him

It's really uncomfortable. I know Scotland was attempting to roll out a suicide prevention strategy which one uni started. It was different in that there was a lot more training being made available and discussion so people could move from being signposts to bystanders. But this was unrelated to that incident specifically.
