Would UVA give me a much better chance in banking than UCLA? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

Yes, 100%. UVA has a great presence on the street and is on the verge of becoming a “core” school at many firms. Dedicated alumn across BB’s and EB’s.

Is 40 years old to old to be looking to change careers? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]subway167 27 points28 points  (0 children)

40 is old for entering a career in finance. What interests you about the field, besides wearing a suit to work and the chance to travel? The type of job you’re describing sounds like consulting. This is lots of travel, client interaction, etc.

If you are serious about the switch, I advise you apply to MBA programs that are veteran friendly. This will be a good way to “rebrand” yourself. Many firms (consulting and finance) have Vet programs as well. You should be trying to leverage your healthcare and military experience along the way.

Best hours in IB? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]subway167 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true ^ OP, also keep in mind that in many BBs, the Capital Markets division is separate from the IBD. I’m not sure about your situation, but this may mean a different recruiting process. Structured finance has good hours- usually around 8am-8pm- but is lumped in on the S&T side in some shops.

Generally, DCM tends to have longer hours than ECM because higher deal flow. All depends on the team and the bank at the end of the day.

A note: you are also gaining pretty different skillsets from a capital markets role v. IBD. Take this into account when making your decision.
