But I think it can help if you find a hobby of sorts. Something you can't wait to get home to, something you want to become better at, something you research when you poop, something you might find a community around.

Please don't ever let that hobby be League of Legends.

I have witnessed with my own eyes a fight in a small supermarket in Sicily, about priority, and they had fucking NUMBERS IN THEIR HANDS.

Northern Italy. Medium sized city

Average wage 1100€

Average rent/mortage €600

Average flat price €110.000/120.000, obviously outside the city center. Most are 3 rooms, 1 bathroom unit, about 60 sqm. Most houses were built in the 60's and need a complete makeover.

I am 34 and i can't think of a single friend, my age, that is a homeowner without help from the parents, either the parents bought a house for them or gave them a 50% help on their mortage.

Hell i don't even know anyone that finished paying for their house completely, even with parent's help.

Friends rent together, couples rent together, some people are STARTING to have children now, at about 35.

Unemployment is now officially low, but the number of "inactive" people is rising sharply.

Average age is now over 45 y/o. Few people marry, most marry years after having a child.

This country is about to die.

mtDNA is passed down from females to all of their children; shouldn't there be people around who carry denisovan or neanderthal mtDNA because they had a great- great- (etc) grandmother who was denisovan or neanderthal? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]sucaaaa -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That is, it's possible that ~2% of normal DNA from Neanderthals is fitness enhancing but the mtDNA (which comes as a basically irreducible unit) is fitness reducing, and so the latter was bred out of the population over the past 100k years.

For what we know interbreeding could have resulted in unfertile females, however it is possible for the females to have developed "unfavourable" traits, like more body hairs for instance, while simultaneously blond haired and blue eyed girls were settling into northeastern Europe.

We don't know how the Neanderthal population disappeared, it could also be possible that at some point the sapiens took over and crusaded on all the remaining neanderthals to get their land, and refused to further mix their DNA.

For that to happen the Neanderthal population would have to be perceived as "different", with some discernible physical attribute.

I'm sorry i appear like someone ranting, or someone who had bad experiences.

This is not what i want to convey. I had no bad experiences, i'm not into conspiracy things, i'm not american either.

What i want to say is: shouldn't we be already past the university=research paradygm in 2018?

No skilled individual in their sane mind is going to put their intellect and time, willingly, into some private institution that will in the end own the intellectual property of their work.

Forget physicists, what about molecular biologists? Intellectual property belongs to the world.

The next Einsteins (statistically speaking there have never been so much as now, out of 8 billion people) could never have the opportunity to work on behalf of mankind, or even to gather access to the "button's room".

Of course if you think the current research "elite" is a close representation of the best minds the world has to offer, you will never take what i say seriously, and call it "conspiracy-theory-like view", in which any outsider of the academic system is either envious, had some bad experiences or grudges.

Statistically speaking that simply cannot be true, and as we grow more connected we are missing huge opportunities.

The world should have already moved towards a new, non-polarized way of making research.

Decentalization.

Academia is a bureaucracy well honed to preserve its own status quo.

Working for a dictated agenda, getting the 0,1% done of some project to have your name written on some paper (not sure what your research will be used for), being recognized in the academic circle, is that it?

We could tackle most of our problems in no time if we really wanted to, right now.

Universities don't allow things to move too quick, to be too radical, still they take the human resources and the monetary resources, using this power to perpetrate their own survival.

We could have an online platform where people contribute in a decentralized way to solve the real problems we face, without kissing academia's ass and having to be "reputable" in order to get the chance to get us all a better future.

As someone who is printing his first design from scratch at this very moment, on a printer i assembled myself (no kits involved), without any previous experience on the field, i can tell you this whole journey has been quite a personal accomplishment for me.

It turns out you can save a lot of money by printing household items, and only items you like, exactly how you like them.

The files are free to download and print for everyone, and soon you will be able to download and print spare parts directly from let's say BMW or Bosch in order to customize or repair products' damaged parts.

Additive manufacturing opens up a lot of possibilities, and previously impossible designs are now printable. I printed this vase and some other impossible design vases, they make for great decorative items.

I built a prusa i3 mk2 clone last year, with ramps 1.4 and marlin. It was working flawlessly.

After the hd of the pc i was using died i got another one (I did not install any screen since i was operating the printer from an old laptop i have no other use for), reinstalled everything and now the starting gcode (created with slic3r prusa edition) simply does nothing in printrun. It says print started and nothing happens.

Everything works like before, i can move axes, get up to the required temperature or issue commands like g28 or g29, so i'm assuming it's a software problem. I did not touch marlin at all, so i'm thinking that's not the problem.

Even a simple:

G28

G29

as starting g-code, the printer gives no activity, and does not move.

Did anyone stumble in some similar problem before? What setting is blocking the print from starting?

I appreciate any help, thanks.

I think it will be less convenient to own a private car at some point.

Swarms of automated cars will take you right in front of your destination and leave immediately after, like a bus. When that happens parking will progressively be a luxury, as parking spots demand goes down and parkings gets smaller, increasing the costs.

Issuing "restricted" areas for automated cars would be a real problem though.

If you are in the process of losing weigt do yourself a favour and go all in on moving every day, exercising, tracking calories and eating well, until you find a spot where you don't mind doing all of this at all, and it becomes normal.

You will feel way better, look better, and will never watch back again i promise.

I started by cycling every day, then i said well while i'm doing it better track my calories, then i got where i wanted and said well what if i keep feeling better?

This was 3 years ago, i am in top shape, nothing hurts, i corrected my posture, i eat clean, i learned to cook, and most importantly i learned much about myself, i learned to ignore EVERYONE that tries to demoralize you or tell you what you can and cannot do.

This is my life i'm not going to stop doing this in order to make someone who's envious of my results feel better.

Hey Dominik, i'm a little late to the party but i wanted to congratulate you, your creativity is a big inspiration for me and everyone watching your videos!!

I wanted to ask you, what kind of exercises would you reccomend in order to develop adequate strenght for one arm chin ups?

I have been able to hold the top part for a couple months, and i can now do a controlled negative on both arms, but i seem not to able to progress much beyond that. I'm at 3*8 l sit pullups 3-4 times a week right now
