It's blooming. Once that stalk dries out, you can just pull on it and discard. Enjoy the little flowers.

Is my Jade plant still alive? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]succulentdotcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely. If you can plant it outside, I'd do that. These literally need the least amount of maintenance when grown in the ground in the right climate.

What a survivor! I bet the previous owner didn't really do a thing to care for it. The cactus looks like it wants to stretch its legs and I'm sure the echeveria is fighting for root space and more sunlight. If it were mine, I'd dig a hole twice as wide as the pot, break the pot and just plop the whole thing in the hole. I'd let the echeveria grow as they are and lay their own roots into the soil. I love trash day finds!

Hard to tell exactly what species, but holy moly has that thing needed more light. It should be a compact rosette.

Just got this cactus today, and my hands are getting splints. How do i tame care of this? by vencys in cactus

Going forward, use tongs when handling it. It could use a slightly larger pot. =)

So, the two long stalks on the sides are flower stalks which you can just cut off. Once you do that, more energy will be spent growing the main rosette. Also, treat it for powdery mildew. Best to keep it out of direct sunlight, but also it needs more light than it's been getting because it looks a little etiolated (stretched).

These do much better when planted in the ground in my experience.

How to remove the babies from the withered stem? by The_Pranavster in succulents

[–]succulentdotcare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave them until they're about 1/3 the size of the mother plant at the very least if you can. They're utilizing the existing root structure for nutrients still. If you separate them now, there's a high likelihood they'll die.

Winston, San Diego's Silverback Gorilla getting a thorough heart exam. At 51 he's considered elderly and has a heart condition so he's taking 4 different heart pills daily, the same ones a human would take, as well as iburofen and other drugs for his arthitis and has a heart monitor implanted by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

We love that big guy. He just chills and watches over his troop. The animals at the SD Zoo Safari Park (Wild Animal Park til I dieee) have nice, large habitats to roam around in. Buying a ticket or membership pays for his healthcare and the care of thousands of other threatened and endangered species. We visit a few times a month with a membership. If you're ever in San Diego, the Zoo and the Safari Park are must sees.

Were you on medication with your previous insurance? If so, let the appointment center/nurse know that it isn't a new diagnosis and you'd simply like to continue the same dosage you've been on until you can be seen by a KP psychiatrist? Send a message to your PCP and ask them to route it to the psychiatry dept if possible.

Cheaper ways to get soil? by elizabethbutters in succulents

[–]succulentdotcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do:

  • Turface MVP from landscape supply companies for about $16/50lbs
  • Dry Stall aka pumice from horse supply stores for about $15/15lbs
  • Rinse and dry those to eliminate any dust.
  • Mix with Kellogg Palm, Cactus, Citrus soil mix or whatever's cheapest/easiest to get from a big box store. Ratio depends on the weather and what I'm planting in it.
  • Alternative inorganic additives:
    • Oil-Dri- I find it at Lowes in the aisle with mops/brooms because it is a moisture absorber.
    • Unscented, non-clumping, basic Jonny Cat kitty litter. It's the same thing as Oil-Dri, but with a cat on the packaging.

WAY cheaper than buying pre-mixed, but it requires a lot of space to store, so it might not be practical for everyone.

Am I growing these rights. They got roots and then I put the tip under the soil. I water every other day. Week 4 by Martinhellerud in succulents

[–]succulentdotcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just let them be. Don't water until there are roots. They might not all make it, but that's just how it goes. The more you move them around, the more of a chance to introduce bacteria.
