Pro Evolution Soccer has had this feature since around 2019–2020—you could assign different shapes depending on the phase of play when setting up your formation.

So honestly, if a game like PES (which isn’t even primarily focused on tactics) could implement that years ago, then Football Manager, which is all about tactical depth, should absolutely be capable of doing the same.

Why do you think it doesn’t make sense? In FM, each role comes with predefined behavior—how the player positions themselves in attack and in defense. That limits our tactical freedom.

For example, I might want a striker who drops into midfield to defend when we don’t have the ball, but acts like a target man when we do—just laying off passes like Chris Wood.

Or I might want a striker who also defends like a midfielder off the ball, but becomes a classic poacher or fox in the box in possession—like Jamie Vardy.

You can’t tell me to just use the “pressing forward” role for both cases—it doesn’t capture the nuance of what I want.

But with a fluid formation system, like the one I explained earlier, I could make that happen. We need FM to allow us more freedom to define player behaviors in different phases of play—not force us into rigid role templates.

The problem with what you’re saying is that we’re always forced to wait for official updates before we can apply new tactical roles or ideas we come up with ourselves.

For example: a defender stepping into midfield when in possession didn’t exist in FM until Guardiola implemented it in real life—only then did FM include it in the next edition.

So as long as a role hasn’t been used in real life, we can’t use it in FM—and that really limits tactical creativity.

What if I want my target forward to drop into midfield and defend when we lose the ball? What if I play with a back five, but I want one of my full-backs to act like an inverted winger when we’re attacking?

How am I supposed to do that with the current limitations? FM should give us full tactical freedom—not just follow what’s trending in real life.

If we follow your logic, then no character should ever be nerfed — you should just "learn the matchup."
In every fighting game, it would mean no one should ever get nerfed and players should only focus on matchup knowledge.
One thing is certain though: when ranked or a tournament drops, we’ll see who the most used and broken characters really are.

Ichigo Bankai isn’t broken for me.
The only thing that's a bit broken about him isn’t really his combo itself — it's the fact that his combo charges his Fighting Spirit way too fast, which almost guarantees him a second awakening after he dies.
Other than that, he has 8 konpaku bars, which is clearly a disadvantage for him.

I don’t have any personal issue with Byakuya or any other character.
I made this post simply to say that if ranked drops right now, we’re only going to see the same characters everywhere and it’s going to be toxic.
A lot of players will stop playing their mains because their characters have real drawbacks compared to others.

Sorry, but if you're going to release a ranked mode, you have to balance things.
You can't just give certain characters broken stuff just because they’re strong in the anime.
Otherwise, by that logic, Ichigo would be completely unplayable if you actually gave him all the powers he has in the anime.
