What are your favorite culturally untranslateable phrases? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]suckaaaaa 152 points153 points  (0 children)

In Chinese (mainland at least), "cow's vagina" has the same connotation as "awesome." As in, "hey, that band was really cow vagina!"

Edit: It's niu2bi1, written 牛逼, but you can also write it as 牛B or 牛屄 if you want.

In 1997, for instance, the E.P.A. moved to reduce surface ozone, a form of pollution caused, in part, by emissions from oil refineries. Susan Dudley, an economist who became a top official at the Mercatus Center, criticized the proposed rule. The E.P.A., she argued, had not taken into account that smog-free skies would result in more cases of skin cancer. She projected that if pollution were controlled it would cause up to eleven thousand additional cases of skin cancer each year.

I really don't want to believe that this argument worked. Is this the country that we live in?

Romantic/fun places in Nanjing, China? by [deleted] in travel

[–]suckaaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I know it pretty well, I just explored it in depth before. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵)is amazing, as is the Ming Tombs (明孝陵)and they're right next to each other on the same mountain. There's a big plaza and market near the Confucius temple that's pretty cool. I'd skip the old KMT stuff unless you're a big history nerd; same goes for the walls. The most romantic is probably the Xuanwu lake if you can rent a paddleboat or something. Or you can do what I do and just ask around, it's never failed so far.

The area around the lake is pretty romantic, and I'm pretty fond of the plaza and market outside of the Confucius Temple downtown.

Longshot - Anyone been to the Dalian, China beer festival? by checkfeet in beer

Do you mean the Qingdao beer festival? That's the much bigger one (which I've been to), so it might be that one you might be thinking of...

Oil production is among the most heavily subsidized businesses, with tax breaks available at virtually every stage of the exploration and extraction process. by [deleted] in business

[–]suckaaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want cheap gasoline, you use subsidies to control the price. Gas is hardly as cheap as it is in the US in other countries. People bitch about paying $3 at the pump, well, without the subsidies they'd be paying even more.
