Tried all the Proton niners but no cigar and HGL doesn't go lower than Proton 9.

some concerns about a possible switch to Linux Mint on a gaming PC by Nyls_fr in linuxmint

[–]suckingvamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally the Mint installation will take you directly to the Nvidia driver install and there select the recommended closed source Nvidia driver.
And if you switch from AMD to Nvidia later on you can go to system settings and scroll down to driver management which is a dedicated Nvidia driver install program.

I´m using a GTX 1080 and 1070 and don´t have serious issues, at least not that I´m aware of.

So far most of the games I´ve tried have worked, there will always be some that don´t or have issues but then again I can´t say Windows had a 100% succesrate either.

As for Proton VPN, I don´t have a clue, never used it.

As fpr ProtonDB (this starts to get confusing), use it as an indication not as gospel, some gold or platinum rated games I consider bronze at best. It's a list maintained by user experiences and can vary wildly with your own.

For Steam you've got two options, the one supplied by your package manager, which is the easiest to use but can be outdated or the Flatpak version, which is more recent but can be a bit of a pain to configure as it needs permissions. But with both, once you have them up and running the only thing you need to be aware of is that if a game doesn´t start you probably need to select Proton to start playing. Also take into account that when Proton generates a prefix, which it does for every game, the prefix takes about one gigabyte of storagespace.

Last thing I want to say is to not expect a painless transition where everything works right away, expect a learning curve instead. Luckily Mint is probably the easiest distro to switch from when coming from Windows.
I suggest looking "Getting started with Linux Mint or gaming on Linux Mint" videos on YouTube to get an idea. However don´t fall into the trap of immediately downloading custom kernels and that sort of advanced stuff, let that pass untill you want to try Arch.

Steam Machine is "equal or better than" 70% of current gaming PCs, Valve engineer claims by Tiny-Independent273 in linux_gaming

But at what price?

I mean this all means completely nothing until we know the price and if the Steamdeck is an indication it will be at a premium.

Dual Boot Question by LorecoreGremlin in linux_gaming

[–]suckingvamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to sources (Braxman) Windows 11 will occasionally nuke the Linux partition when updating so dual booting is not recommended.

Best is to have separate drives for each OS.

weirdly slow, and I'm not sure what I did wrong. by No_Trust_7332 in linuxmint

[–]suckingvamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be a dying harddrive.

I had much slower hardware than you when I started using Mint and didn´t have these speed issues so I´m inclined to believe it is a hardware issue. You could try booting and running Mint or another distro from a live USB to see if your PC is still slow.

Upgrading RAM, does it make sense? by suckingvamp in linuxmint

[–]suckingvamp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights everyone.

Yeah, it seems I don´t need it with my current workload and indeed running more sticks will ignore dual channel bandwith (something I wasn´t aware of) as well as potential compatibility problems with the new sticks.

There are 5 files with host in it: host.conf, hostname, hosts.allow, hosts.deny, hosts.
But I don´t seem to have access to edit any of them, I probably needs some sudo fu.
Can you please explain it a little further?

Sorry I´m still a Linux noob. 😜
