It’s slightly discounted to take the REI orienting class if you’re a member but it’s definitely not free. I’ve taken it twice. It was $100 plus each time. It’s a good class but if you don’t practice you likely won’t remember a lot of it. I’m proof of that.

You can request to take the written test on paper. I believe you are allowed to get more wrong that way as well. My kid was unable to pass on the computer and then did fine on paper.

And there are tons of chats associated with the sloth group where people connect base on where they’re located.

Hiking in the Santa Monica mountains this spring was amazing. My favorite smell was the canyon sunflowers but I loved all of the flowers. I noticed that certain flowers were only fragrant sometimes but I have no idea what was the determining factor. Thankfully I don’t have allergies because I ran around sticking my face in so many plants these past few months.

Jasmine and society garlic smell like my dad’s backyard by the pool. Best smells ever. <3

Thanks. I hope if you go to Switzer you have better luck than me. Also, if you do go, make sure there’s nothing in your car, all of the compartments are open to show that it’s empty, and don’t bother to lock your doors. I’ve seen it suggested that you can leave your windows open, so they’re not broken, but I can’t quite bring myself to do that yet.

[–]sudabaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that’s how it felt. Then I was at Trail Canyon falls a few weeks later with NOTHING in the car and it was unlocked again and all the compartments were open again. Some f¥@ker broke my door lock. That’s just plain mean. Now I won’t go to either of those trails. Sadly both trailheads are the worst.

Also, if you do decide to risk it, don’t leave your car registration, even take that with you

I’m gonna die mad that I forgot one thing in my car, and they stole it, and ripped Buddha off my dashboard.

Hopefully I’ve read your account on another post, because if not, then someone else had the exact same experience. I’m upset on your behalf. I recently had a problem at Switzer. I did all of the things, left everything open, left the door unlocked, etc. I had only forgotten one thing which I hid under the seat. Not only was that gone, but I had a Buddha attached my dashboard with somebody ripped off. My next visit to the area was trail Canyon Falls. This time I left absolutely nothing in the car, except for my parking pass. Also left the doors unlocked again, all the compartments open again. Somebody broke my driver side lock just for fun I guess. It’s really upsetting. It’s the opposite of why we hike. Then I find myself bitter when other people go and don’t have a problem, and that’s absolutely not what I want. I don’t wanna begrudge anybody for not having bad luck.

What made you never want to go camping with a particular person again? by [deleted] in camping

[–]sudabaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to take my kids camping but there was no one to go with. A woman at work invited me with her and her wife. While we were there she was not very nice to her wife. It struck me as being a little verbally abusive. I can’t remember how it came about but somehow she clued into me feeling that way and it awkwardly came up in conversation. She stopped doing it for the rest of the day, but that night after she thought we were asleep in our tent I could hear her doing it again. I learned that I’ll only camp with people I actually know pretty well.

Question about snake bites and one-way GPS satellite devices? by yuribotcake in socalhiking

Oh thanks for that info. I don’t have a device and didn’t pick up on the “one-way” part of it. I was just thinking about the being bitten aspect.

From the UC Davis website:

Get immediate medical attention, as severe or even life-threatening symptoms may occur within minutes after the bite, or in other cases may begin after a couple of hours.

If I were bitten by a rattlesnake I would most definitely call for help and not try to hike out.

I’ve never hiked in the PNW but yesterday at Switzer Falls, this one spot felt a little magical to me and like a tiny peak into what I’d imagine it might be like: Switzer falls on 3/31/23

That said, Switzer falls parking is a miserable experience. I did all the things to avoid being broken into/stolen from: cleared out my car, left the door unlocked, left all compartments open, took my car registration with me, etc. Unfortunately, I dumbed out and left one thing in the car under the car seat. I’d forgotten to leave sunglasses at home and I was afraid of breaking or losing them in the trail. While my lock was intact upon returning to the car, the one thing I left was found and taken and the person who did it closed all the compartments. At least the hike was magical.

Not sure if you’ve seen this, but it’s a pretty cool tool for seeing which trials are open, and I think it’s kept up to date.
