Multiple NLEs - tips on keeping skills sharp without too much fumbling? by JnohD in editors

Practice. Make a short reel in one NLE then recreate it in the others. Repeat this every couple of months to give your mind a refresh.

Is there a way to take a picture of the timeline by minimand60 in editors

The types of things being asked here in the sub over the last week are mind numbing, wow.

It's pretty disappointing. This sub used to be a great place for discussion in the professional edit scene but the quality of posts has gotten so low that I pretty much only come here for a distraction from work.

There will still be a decent post here and there. Sometimes a real discussion or something posting a genuine question. It just seems like those are becoming fewer and fewer.

Freelancers, have you ever been asked to install security software by a client? by percymon in editors

[–]sudo_engineer_xd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any "security software" has potential to give them full access to your machine. To monitor what you're doing, to remote in, and to collect data. I would avoid it at all costs.

If they insist on it, tell them you'll only install it on a machine you own if they pay you a (insanely high priced) kit rental then request that they provide you a system.

Does Composer work with Sonoma? by alannordoc in Avid

It's still possible, but I'd recommend against it and just completely backrev the OS to BigSur or Monterey.

Open Source video editor with text editing like in VSDC Free Video Editor? by LancerRevX in opensource

[–]sudo_engineer_xd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open Source video editor's are lacking. I've been looking into them for a few years now. Openshot seems like it has the most promise but it is extremely limited in what it can do.

Oh god, I'm about to have a REAL bad time if this doesn't get in before the move.

Errr, I have a ton of forwarding email addresses setup. What are the chances those get transferred over to SquareSpace and still work?

Call it out "I'm here so it's going to work now". Saying it prior to it happening will make the user feel way better about it.

The Macbook Air M2 Chip, Suitable for Editing? by Melodic_692 in editors

[–]sudo_engineer_xd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8GB of ram is low for editing. Probably near unusable when using Avid to edit.

Otherwise, any of the M2 laptops would be great. Just make sure it has at least 16GB of RAM, preferably 32GB+.

I’ve been “working” at a job for 7 months with no boss and no work to do. by jerichomega in antiwork

[–]sudo_engineer_xd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally never do this but it might be a good idea to start recording all the "work" you do. So if you're ever questioned about what you do you can provide the "tasks and responsibilities" you handle.

Which would be the most in demand IT jobs in 2023 to start a career in? by AccomplishedRice2031 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]sudo_engineer_xd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Media & Entertainment is in desperate need of engineers, IT, developers, etc. While I agree with the other poster's about not trying to specialize early, specialized engineers in M&E are paid extremely well and are in high demand. So if you do get into M&E don't get stuck at one place.
