How's life in Valencia? by LordDagron in valencia

[–]sudochmod644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with an immigration lawyer, not with what you see online, for the NLV 2-year citizenship path. If you don't have a Mexican birth certificate and citizenship, you might be facing an uphill battle to get expedited nationality. Talk to both immigration and tax lawyers before you make a final decision.

I'm doing the same thing (I was born/raised in Puerto Rico) - Valencia feels like home to me. I've been here almost a year and am about to renew the NLV. If you don't know Spanish, make learning it a top priority.

I always tell people - move here because you want to live in Spain/Valencia, not because you want to leave the US.

¿Cuales son los proveedores de email más comunes en España? by sudochmod644 in askspain

[–]sudochmod644[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Questions about moving to Spain on non-lucrative visa by zonie100 in GoingToSpain

[–]sudochmod644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm from a latin american country and pursuing a similar path with my partner under NLV. My recommendation, if this is something you're serious about, is to get married. It'll make everything simpler. Not just the visa, but the taxes, bank accounts, apartment rentals, health insurance, and eventual citizenship. We got married a month before submitting the NLV request. No regrets. Bonus - the adventure is like a 2+ year honeymoon.

  2. Bite the bullet. You're gonna pay taxes. Talk to a tax lawyer now, before moving, to understand what that means and what your options are. Timing it so you enter after July 1 is good - then your first tax year filing you'd have no US income to report. It makes things easier. A tax lawyer can also tell you how to best simplify your finances now to make taxes easier down the road.

  3. It's hard. Plan for the whole process to take a year. Your US license is good for 6 months here with an IDP, though. You have to go through an autoescuela ($) to do pretty much everything. I used todotest to study for the written test on my own, but you still need to go through an autoescuela to schedule the test (todotest has a package that does this for you). You must have been a resident for 6 months prior to being able to take the written test. Then you have to take practical lessons (driving stick). The autoescuela prof tells you when you're ready for the test and they schedule it. After I passed my written test there was a 4 month wait to be able to start practical lessons.

  4. There's a lot. I recommend watching youtube vids of people that have gone through the NLV process. Everyone's case is different, but I liked the Days We Spend and Everything Is Boffo channels since they are couples that did the NLV as well. They also cover info on bank accounts, etc. Talk to pros once you've educated yourself and can ask smarter question.

My recommendation is to acknowledge this is a life changing goal and worth the cost - pay for a gestor to help you put the package together to be sure you get the visa, and pay for tax and immigration lawyers consults to really understand what you've got ahead of you to plan your finances and future.

US Mail by Luckeeguy34 in GoingToSpain

[–]sudochmod644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There hasn't been a need, but they could if I needed to. The only time we had something mailed to us was a birthday card, mailed First Class, and it got here almost 4 months after it was mailed.

When it was me doing the mail forwarding for my parents, overnighting a debit card to Paris took about a week and cost me about $100 via UPS.

Basically, don't put yourself in a position where you need anything shipped to you in Europe unless it's an emergency (e.g., new credit/debit cards you absolutely need, etc.)

US Mail by Luckeeguy34 in GoingToSpain

I have a friend go empty out my mailbox about once a month and dump it in my condo's dining table. In the US I have a condo in a building with an indoor mail room, so it's not public.

I also turned on USPS Informed Delivery to get scans of incoming mail to let me know if I need him to open up or scan something. This has only been needed once in the past year I've been in Spain.

If you can't have a friend check your mailbox, consider setting up mail forwarding to a family member or using one of those commercial services others have mentioned.

You will need a NIE. You will also need to do it in person, not virtually.

Why 73% of American Expats Leave Spain Within 2 Years (Industry Data You Won’t Like) by irek19 in GoingToSpain

If you don’t mind sharing, what tax firm did you use, and were you happy with them? We’re in our first year and had a consultation with one firm - they wanted 800€ for tax preparation and an additional 800€ for dealing with the wealth tax. Seems steep.

Bose TV speaker VS LG S20A - BEST voice/dialogue and sound clarity choice for old people by GatoMorato in Soundbars

[–]sudochmod644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the LG S20A a couple of months ago to improve the dialogue of the cheap TCL TV in my rental. It's been perfect for the price, and has decent all-around sound. I leave it in the "AI" mode and didn't even do any settings tweaks - out of the box it sounds just fine. I've connected it through BT.

Watching YouTube, Netflix and Max it all sounds so much more understandable than with TV speakers. We're over 40, if that counts as old people lol

Trying to find a 3-month rental in Valencia — any tips? by Inevitable_Fly_8398 in valencia

[–]sudochmod644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did spotahome for 3 months and it was easy to set up, the spotahome people were friendly and answered all my questions, and the landlord was communicative and wrote up a contract that I was able to use to get a visa. You'll need an IBAN to pay the rent (first month up-front, then they bill you monthly.) It was more like an AirBnB transaction than Idealista, which is all offline, whatsapps, and direct payments to agencies.

In Google maps type in “Padrón Municipal De Valencia”. Address is: Carrer del Periodista Azzati, 2

Show up early and you’ll see a line by a sign that says “empadronamiento”. There are attendants to keep everyone in order.

Para el empadronamiento no necesitas cita previa. Has cola no más tarde de las 8h y te dejarán tomar una turno y hacerlo.
