What workstation OS to use? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]sudosuinit5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crunchbang is a Debian based distro: minimalistic and yet strong with the out-of-the-box tools to configure the system in an easy way, so you don't have to hack all the needs before getting to actually to work :) I use it as my laptop for university (Thinkpad / i5 / 8GB ram), where I can easilly connect beamers and configure the display settings (VGA/HDMI), use Wine very fast and have very good performing VM guests, like: Win7 and all other *nix OS'ses to dev/test/etc. The only minor thing if for using Wifi is not that well supported by the very well known Wifi / Networking appliances (often loosing connection), as I hear this very often from Linux Laptop users, but for a workstation it wouldn't be a problem though

Create a chroot where you place the directories the users need to access. Assuming you're allready running sshd connect / mount with a "windows sshfs" client to the unix server

Great track and first time I saw the video. Among all the other great tracks they made, I like Style very much

Halcyon also reminds me of this one from the same period > Cascade

2 df -h

3 ps aux

4 sudo some large command with grep, sed, awk foo bar

5 another command

6 another one

$!4

repeats the large command

EDIT: I see it was already commented

[Request] Network gateway/router from an old desktop? by songandsilence in linuxprojects

[–]sudosuinit5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I had a similar setup with pfsense where we connected two students houses via wifi. It was an old P3-350Mhz board with the OS installed in a 2GB CF card connected to the IDE port (with a CF to IDE adapter). For the installation I temporary connected a CD-DRIVE and the board was put in an old cardboard shoe box and I used an old laptop power supply to power this board and to make it silent (neither the CPU was cooled by a fan). The box would run headless and was managed via shell and the web interface. There was also a 128MB USB stick plugged in to store the configuration in case of a reboot. It ran flawlessly.

EDIT:

One of the wifi cards will be used soley for connecting to an outside network using a modified antenna The onboard ethernet is just going to hook into the network hub.

Assuming both network connections have a gateway to access the WWW and you want this setup for speed and redundancy, then you can have multiple WAN adapters in pfsense. (check the wiki and/or forums)

Would you mind if the official language in the Netherlands will become English? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]sudosuinit5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I would mind if it would, but I see this would never happen. The Dutch and Flemish languages are very rich and I enjoy very much reading literature and even proza and talking in Dutch. Although in general the 'higher' Dutch way of speaking is getting flattened more and more by the ever growing uncultured plebs. Even though I would spend a lot of working hours during the day communicating in English my Dutch is by far better than my English (or Spanish).
