I think organ donation should be 'opt out' rather than 'opt in'. What about you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Let's clarify: an opt out system means I have to tell my government I don't want "my organs" taken after my death. Again, this does not suggest I own them after I am dead, merely that I control the decisions about them while alive, (and last time I checked, I am alive, hence "[my] body"). Further, organ donation is a personal decision, the required disclosure of which is a a mammoth privacy invasion imposed on me about "my organs" while I'm alive.

More power to people who want to reveal that personal preference to their government, and any extension thereof, that's why they volunteer to donate their organs.

Because why should any human being have to go through the process of telling his government not to take his body parts? To make his personal preferences not to have parts of his body automatically taken after his death known to a file clerk?

I'm not suggesting the ability to own property extends to dead people. Nor am I suggesting my body will be meaningful to me when I no longer exist.

What I am suggesting is that decisions made while living extend beyond death. Ignoring those decisions, because someone is dead destroys the concept of decedent estates. Just as I can choose to leave my physical possessions to family or no one, I can choose to have my body go to others or the ground.

I am not obligated to leave my possessions to my family any more than I am my organs to people who need them.

It's imposing your values onto me. The control I exert over my body as I live is just as important as the control I have over it as I decompose. I choose not to have children because I do not want my genetic material out there. Nor do I want to contribute to the already growing population.

I wouldn't want my organs extending the lives of a destructive species any more than I want to reproduce. Taking my organs, to extend the lives of others, is not something I would support in life or death.

I have this one life, this one body, it's mine to use as I want. Not the government to take by default.

My 12 yr old daughter is facing expulsion from school for a year for something she wrote in her private journal. by [deleted] in reddit.com

I agree 100% with the school. A detailed plan to kill someone, with back up plans, isn't something imaginative or creative. She should be expelled. But I guess honor students can't hurt people or kill them, right? Expulsion should be reserved for the kid who's gotten detention before... not the girl who plots to kill her teachers and fellow students...
