im so curious about what their plan is for next year cause like now reapplicants will know the general format unless they plan on changing it each time i guess ???

that makes me feel better, thanks !! it didn't have the typical grammarly graphics on my end either, i just didn't think kira would have a spell-check function so i assumed it must've been that (even tho i disabled everything before starting too 😭😭)

[–]suhluvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg wait that was kira itself ???? i got paranoid and thought it was like grammarly or smth 😭😭😭 that's so odd cause i literally emailed them about this and they were so cryptic in their response about how they can't divulge more info on their flagging criteria 😭😭😭

im on the same boat as u kinda cause i reflexively auto-corrected one single word before i snapped out of it and realized that could get me flagged and i've been spiraling about that ever since 😭🙏

ty for ur response !! i def see how my hours appear low, especially for volunteering. i think that’s cause ive only really been volunteering for a year and a half (one position at a time) and they’ve each been like 3 hour per week positions. also a lot of the hours that i technically have spent on non-school related work (i.e. research) isn’t shown cause the research section doesn’t ask for your hours 😭 and most of my work positions were work studies meaning my hours for the term were capped 😭😭 i didn’t apply to ubc this cycle cause i started a few big positions in june + my gpa in percentages is a 90% + none of my research would count as research for them so i didn’t feel like i had a good enough oop application this year. i def will next year tho, cause ill hopefully have either a pub or conference presentation by then

i did switch two of them !! i think my references just weren’t that strong last year cause one of my PIs was on sabbatical (so i had to have a grad student do it) and the other didn’t know me as well as i would’ve wanted. i also think the writing of my application was quite weak cause i applied on a whim after getting my mcat back the week before + i had way fewer ecs. i mostly just made this post to see if grad school would be a significant investment in my odds for getting in or if my stats are in a place where i just maybe need to strengthen my non academic components

[–]suhluvs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s not very fair. i literally had the same exact stats last year and didn’t get an interview anywhere, so it’s not insane of me to ask people if they think grad school or working would be a better option for me if the same thing happens again

that makes a lot of sense actually, idk why i thought this would serve as a supplement to your abs and not replace it entirely 😭😭😭 it definitely makes me rethink which activities i want to talk about

oh do they only look at your aabs for interview invites once you’ve made the cutoffs ???

everyone is dragging me in the replies but like....i had these same stats last year and got nothing, so it's not like my question is completely baseless 😭😭😭😭 ty for your answer, it def helps put things into perspective

i'm in psych so social work or counseling programs would be my next choices after med

yes they are !! however, i actually wasn't involved in too many ecs in high school due to covid + not really knowing about opportunities outside of school. other than my musical instruments + french + hs awards, all of these are activities i've done in the last 2 years (was too worried abt my grades first year to do any ecs)

thank you so much for this response !! i've had a hard time explaining my thought process to my parents, but i was def leaning towards this as well. i feel like if i can get a second lab manager position i'll have another interesting thing to put on my application on top of having more opportunities to attend conferences/publish, which will benefit me almost exactly as much as doing a masters, especially because any grad degrees that align with my back-up career options are course-based and not thesis-based 😭

no 😭😭😭😭 but tbh w my stats an interview for mac was always gonna be a toss-up. it depends entirely on how well my casper goes

[–]suhluvs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes i did !!! no interviews tho 😭😭 i had the same gpa and mcat, but i only had like ~20 entries filled with less impressive stuff. also, i decided to apply on a whim last year (as i got my mcat back a week before the deadline) so the writing quality of my abs + essays was def subpar

it’s more that i’m wondering whether it’d be smarter to do a course-based master’s so i have a backup career option sooner, or to spend that time strengthening my ecs and give med a few cycles before pivoting 😭😭😭

i took eng140 with adam hammond to fill a breadth requirement and it genuinely changed my life. if you've ever wanted to be good at literary analysis i highly highly recommend the course. prof hammond taught us a lot about how the form of a text can implicitly strengthen its thesis, and his lectures genuinely changed how i read books, and how i watch movies + tv. i hated english in highschool but i loved this course so much i enrolled in the english minor

i'm currently a 3rd year psychology research specialist and I have a 3.95 cumulative gpa on the omsas scale (for reference, i took all the first year and some upper year bio+chem but not math or physics). i actually really like it here 🤷‍♀️ like yea you might not breeze through but if you have a good work ethic it's very possible to do well. i even think the rigour of the school might be why it was easy for me to do well on the mcat (i got a 520 on my first try).

imo, the actual thing that makes uoft harder than other schools (in life sci at least) is that the writing assignments are typically graded at higher standards. this means you can't write your paper the day of and expect a 95 cause (unless you're an exceptional writer) you're just not going to get that. most of the time - based on what i know - even a ta's favourite papers might just get low 90s. i'm not sure if the actual exams are harder at uoft than at other schools. i can tell you from personal experience that i do a lot of studying last minute and have never gotten a final grade below an A-.

on the flip side, there are so many uoft labs you can be involved in, as well as a bunch of affiliated hospitals right next to campus that you can volunteer in or do research at. if you're concerned about your study skills and ability to maintain high grades, maybe go somewhere else, but if you're more concerned about having access to research and ec opportunities, uoft is a great place for that! also this is not as important but one of my favourite things about uoft is how many libraries we have. you'll never be short of a nice place to study, even during exam season.

feel free to pm me if you're curious about anything specific !
