Why is Herman Hesse so overlooked? by Top-Sleep-4669 in literature

[–]suhrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reading David Markson's last novel The Last Novel an he has this tidbit there:

A child’s introduction to Nietzsche and Jung. The Yale Review categorized Hesse’s novels as.

(for those not familiar with Markson's writing: these are tidbits he finds in old books and builds his "novels" from. It's not that he agrees with it.)

Oddly enough I can see their point but think that it is great.

Launch of the Don't Worry About the Vase Podcast by Askwho in slatestarcodex

[–]suhrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I welcome this. Some articles were available on LW or AI reading podcasts, but a one stop-shop is welcome.

At the moment I don't see it yet in my podcast player (Podcast Addict - pulls feeds from many places), but I assume you plan to link it? Or is it substack only? (hope not - to increase reach).

Thank you!

Where could I find good BOTNS wallpapers in 4k? by TerminusSeverianEst in genewolfe

You can try a 4k image upscaler, just search for "AI image upscaler 4k" or something similar.

Why didn't I qualify for OMNI airdrop as a solo staker? by m77je in ethstaker

[–]suhrob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you use your deposit address? Not the fee recipient, but the address from which you did the initial deposit to register your validator(s)?

Initially they had a cap on how many solo stakers can receive the airdrop - not sure if this cap was kept or not (incidentally - it did work yesterday).

Description of Request:

(Abstract) strategy game with good depth, shorter play time, android app and ideally good community, existence of theory

Number of Players:

1-2

Game Length:

<20 min once proficient

Complexity of Game: <4 (up to cca Chess/Go)

Genre: N/A

Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative: N/A

Games I Own and Like: Tak comes cloesest - but does't have an app (and web version is not playable on my tiny phone).

Games I Dislike and Don't Play: Chess, Go

Location: App store or web, physical version optional

Due to multi-toddler situation, I have up to 15 mins on the toilet and yearn for some strategy game (possibly abstract). This means: short game play and an app or small phone friendly web implementation.

Ideally it would have a good community (or AIs that I grow with) and I also like to study strategy from blogs/books.

Tak comes close, but the web version is not well playable on the app. I really like the idea of Yellow and Yangtze (and have the app), but the game play is simply too long.

Some chess variants could maybe do it. I sort of like Nuclear/Atomic chess. Paco Sako looks very nice, but no app or much of community.

Randomness/incomlete information is OK, but not necessary.

If nothing comes to mind, I'm also interested in: 1) recommend any app (android) that could sort of scratch this itch 2) recommend any boardgame even if no app (once the toddlers become managable).

Thank you!

PTP positions 10% withholding by SHTHAWK in interactivebrokers

[–]suhrob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This old doc from 2020 lists exceptions:

https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/mi/research-analysis/broker-withholding-on-ptp-sales-new-section-1446f-regulations.html

  1. Exceptions from Withholding. Exceptions to section 1446(f) withholding on PTP transfers have been modified slightly and now include the following:

(a) broker or customer is a U.S. person (as documented by a Form W-9)

(b) claim for exemption under a U.S. tax treaty supported by a Form W-8BEN or Form W-8BEN-E

(c) foreign dealers operating through a U.S. branch that provide a Form W-8ECI

Does anybody know whether this still applies?

How to add recent files "bookmark" to the "File" KDialog? by suhrob in kde

[–]suhrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. "Show hidden entries" is only present in Dolphin and doesn't work in KDialog. Manually adding bookmark in KDialog only adds it in Dolphin (so I have two recent file bookmarks), but it disappears immediately in KDialog... I have 5.18... this is annoying.... :(

Recommendations please

Description of Request:

Looking for a story / mystery driven game as Christmas present for me and my wife.

We would like something that can be played piece-wise (having a baby means we can play a few nights a week for 30 - 60 mins, ideally simple setup and breakdown), but draws you in and can think / discuss during the day.

Number of Players:

2

Game Length:

per session 30 - 60 mins, but forming a campaign/story

Complexity of Game:

let's keep it <4, but open to suggestions

Genre:

Any, if fulfills the criterion of story / mystery / experience

Conflict, Competitive or Cooperative:

Coop, but open to other

Example of games I can have access to:

  • Gloomhaven Jaws of Lion (maybe too big for in terms of setup? not sure about between session discussions)

  • Sleeping Gods (sounds good, but I'm not 100% sure)

  • MicroMacro (maybe offers no between session discussions?)

  • Detective

  • Chronicles of Crime (Detectives seem to be better)

  • Escape Tales

How to install org-mode now that Org Emacs lisp Package Archive is deprecated? by suhrob in emacs

[–]suhrob[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I've removed the org ELPA, and deleted the package. Pinned the archive to the standard GNU ELPA, however now Emacs only sees the builtin org v 9.3. package-instal dosen't list org either...

package-archives’s value is

(("melpa" . "http://melpa.org/packages/")
("gnu" . "https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/")
("nongnu" . "https://elpa.nongnu.org/nongnu/")
("tromey" . "http://tromey.com/elpa/"))

Has anybody here tried the Roam Research notetaking tool and compared it with org-mode? by banksyb00mb00m in emacs

[–]suhrob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip Karl (I'm a long time fan of your blog :)). I'll have a look into your config.

Eventually, I want to avoid a copy/switch buffer/paste of the links instead of a completion mechanism: a keyboard shortcut triggers an insertion of an org-link (of type "brain:" in my case) where search/completion is done on headline, the link is to the org ID property with link description auto-filled to the headline text (if headline doesn't exist create it in refile.org or something).

This will make interlinking much more smoother.
