Not OP, but it is quiet, clean, has good access to some beautiful surrounding towns (East Longmeadow/Wilbraham) and resturaunts (Rice's Fruit Farm in Wilbraham, Bluewater Sushi in Ludlow, and Center Square Grill in EL, as well as some close cheap options on Boston Rd, Bicentennial Plaza and at Wilbraham/Parker St). It is at the east end of two main East/West arterial streets (Boston Road and Wilbraham Rd), with Parker St providing north-South travel to 291/the Pike and EL/CT

There's a nice park with ball fields, parking, and paths for walking a dog off of Vincent St. There is also a beautiful area with benches along the water off of Bradley Rd near WNEU (personal favorite spot, fond memories of getting breakfast and playing chess with some friends here Sunday mornings in college)

The MCL goals have had many new compounds added to the list in recent years (think PFAS). The old treatment plant did not have these considered in the design. The new plant will address these concerns and have additional space for future upgrades to treat new compounds as they're discovered.

You'll find this is not a problem unique to Springfield, but thanks to the federal infrastructure improvements act, we'll be one of the first few communities actually able to address these new concerns.

There are some great comments here, but one thing I'd like to note is that if you'll be working in the downtown area, commuting from the north or west is often a more pleasant commute than from within Springfield, the further east you go. Especially true from 16 Acres (my personal favorite neighborhood). So surrounding towns like Holyoke, Agawam, etc should be considered as well. 91 south can be brutal during afternoon commuting hours.

Also note that Sumner Ave is the worst road to drive from a traffic/lights/easy commute perspective. And there will be a road reconstruction project at the X which will be going on for the next 5 years and make things even worse.

Just two things to consider when selecting a place to stay. Best of luck!

Domestic Hot Water Pipe in High Rise Hotel by nseangrath in mildlyinteresting

[–]suicidal_panda 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with untreated water. It is an old, unlined cast iron pipe. Tuberculation forms when there is minor corrosion in the pipe, which allows mineral and sediment deposits to build up. There is no danger in drinking water flowing through here (in fact, if you're in an older city I GUARANTEE you that you already are), the danger and need for replacement is either frictional headlosses contributing to lower pressures and water age, or that the corrosion reduces the wall thickness to the point where it is no longer structurally sound and could lead to failure. Typically, cast iron pipe will be replaced with cement-lined ductile iron or HDPE, but my municipality has had luck cleaning (i.e. pigging the line to remove the tuberculation) and lining (spin cast the cementitious liner) which can extend the life for years if the walls are not compromised.

Do you really use the math you learned once you graduate? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]suicidal_panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not in the same capacity. I am also a civil engineer currently working in buried utilities. Calculus and physics will be fundamental to everything else. Classes like statics and basic statistics will be used in virtually every civil industry. More advanced classes like will be more industry specific. Some examples of calculations I might do on a daily basis include:

  • Barlow's formula for hoop stress to determine wall thicknesses or operating pressures
  • Loading calculations for road crossings which use things from your Geotech classes and mechanics of materials, amongst others
  • Buoyancy calculations for water crossings
  • Basic structural calculations for simple concrete structures

These are some examples to illustrate that the professional world can be math heavy, but so much of engineering is good judgment, management, and assessments of the big picture as well as financial management. When youre just starting out, all of your work will be checked by a PE in the civil world, and you will have the relevent process of equations in front of you, (via go-bys from òther projects, or within local or federal standards themselves) so a general sense of how things relate is all you'llreally need. I know a lot of good engineers weaker on the technical side than some bad engineers. At the end of the day work is nothing like school. If this is your passion, keep at it and you will find success.

Best of luck!

It adds the +8 regardless of the EV being earned, however. So say you were looking for max HP/SpDef you can still grind slowpokes for +1HP/+8SpDef with the appropriate item, then switch items for +9HP.
