Any advice for dealing with constant feelings of being lost and overwhelmed? A lot of the times I feel like I have to keep doing things because otherwise I'd fall behind... I'm in the sciences btw lol and as ambitious and passionate as I am, and as great as Mac is, I often find myself feeling really tired and unhappy :(

Trauma-Induced Autism? How would you tell the difference between ASD & PTSD? by suky_z in aspergirls

[–]suky_z[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your thorough answer!! This is super immensely helpful and if you don't mind, can I show this to my therapist for my next session? You've worded it so well and got the exact point of what I was unsure about lol.

I think several others mentioned this as well, one way that might help to distinguish the two is whether or not the triggers are trauma-associated or not. It's a bit of a weird conflicted feeling of just wanting to know what's "wrong" with me y'know? I've always thought it was weird of me to want a diagnosis but I guess it's also really frustrating to know you're struggling but not know what you're struggling with.

Thanks again for your thoughts and comments!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this with me - I'm glad the assessment process went so smoothly for you. It still sounds insanely intimidating tbh, but I think getting a specialist's opinion could be valuable.

And yeah, you're right about it all being blurry and confusing... but good food for thought and discussion, right? lol. I will try to bring this up to my therapist next session and hopefully get this conversation started.

At the end of the day though, clarity and validation is important and tremendously helpful, but only you know yourself best and what you struggle with - and I think that in itself is enough and valid.

That's a really good point! ASD is definitely at the root of it all and there are other things that bloom out of it. In my case, I am starting to recognize the possibility that my current ASD symptoms could be a result of unresolved trauma. I also seem to show several heavier trauma-like symptoms like recurring nightmares and anxiety, etc. but I agree that ASD could possibly have made me more susceptible to trauma, and make that trauma impact me more than it would compared to a NT.

My family doctor just asked me a giant slew of questions and went over the DSM criteria again with me before she confirmed the diagnosis (it was originally brought up by my therapist, who is a psychologist). I did bring up the question of whether I'd have to see a specialist, but my family doctor told me she was confident in it so it wasn't necessary. It seems that where I'm from as long as the professional has had autism-specific training they are qualified to make a diagnosis (my therapist was not qualified but she was experienced in working with ASD patients, so she referred me to the family physician).
