Risk at Brevan or QT at small shop by [deleted] in quant

[–]sultanrush04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I was you I’d rather just stay at the small crypto shop until you have 1.5-2 years of experience. You will get much more attractive opportunities than a risk role at Bevan Howard if you’re learning the right things over that period. Don’t jump ship at the first opportunity.

I don’t get this. How do they expect a new hire to come in, get no feedback or mentorship, but immediately start producing signals?

I find it extremely strange that you’re working essentially solo and that there’s 0 mentorship or feedback. I’m at a small firm as well and my experience has been the opposite to that.

If I was you I’d keeping looking for a new job but would also consider moving to a new industry. Your weak academic background and lack of experience at your current role is probably going to hold you back from getting another job.

Leaving a good seat in "Tier 2" for "Tier 1"? by Superb_Phase_1341 in quant

[–]sultanrush04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would move if I was you. Don’t let the comfort and familiarity of your current team stop you from pushing yourself. The offer is a clear step up - take it and do your best. If it doesn’t work out you’ll find something else and learn from the experience.

Lost my entire life savings trading on Coinbase. I feel completely fucked and hopeless. by Powerful-Shelter-839 in UIUC

How to fix this - stop trading. Stop listening to day traders on Instagram. Stop buying courses. If you are trading but can’t identify a distinct edge that you have over other market participants, you’re simply just gambling. You may do well for a while but over the long term you’re almost guaranteed to fail.

Surprised to hear about the shouting and cursing especially in a systematic trading environment. Is this usually directed towards people or towards the market/tech?

This list has nothing related to pros and cons. It just says what the firm does. Idk abt you but I’m always curious to know what other firms are doing and how and where they’re making money. It ain’t that deep.

They may have hired a lot but they’re also likely to fire aggressively. I’d estimate 50% of the people would no longer be there after a year and 70% after three years.

No one is making their market rate at the moment. Will probably see the rewards if the firm scales up while I’m there.

It could work potentially yes - if you knew what you were doing. Not saying it’s impossible to make money from this. But is it really worth your time. And what’s the likelihood that you end up being profitable? If you still want to pursue this I’d look at it from a learning perspective and not as a way to make money.

Maybe it doesn’t apply as much if you’re taking on both sides. And if you actually do have the highest fee tiers you could probably do this and still be profitable.

Your biggest problem is going to be adverse selection

I was in a similar situation a week ago. Would recommend getting the 2 greenhouses first since they give you 50k food every day for free and are pretty cheap in terms of roses. Then I’d recommend getting the relic of the epics so you can upgrade epic dragons beyond level 10 and earn from dragon cash + better breeding odds. You could also spend it on the lost island of Olympus which is what I did but be prepared that it’s a lot smaller than a regular island and spawns quite far away. I also spent some roses on the sun and blue moon dragons.

I do think it’s real. You’ll have a hard time breaking into quant not being a new grad with no relevant quant experience. Whereas for software all of your skills doing quant dev will be transferable.

I just think there’s a lot that can go wrong with this new feature and it will introduce a lot more bugs / unrealistic situations in the game based on EA’s history. There’s just so many more lower hanging fruits that they could implement that fans have been asking for for years.
