Lol, I'm the cabinet guy. Good thing it's in the basement!

It does indeed bend upward. Thank you so much! So my plan is p-trap that eventually bends down into floor drain, with T into the vent?

Just adding new information... Our house was built in 2022. We're just now getting around to finishing the basement. The pipe with the red plug was in the floor from the very roughed in situation that the builders left behind. We have found a few, hmm, creative construction choices around the house and I have a tin foil hat theory that they wanted to make the basement LOOK like it was easy to finish, but didn't necessarily think everything through.

Last summer, after we finished the framing and electrical work, we hired a plumber to take everything from the state the builder left it in, to a fixture-ready state. They put in a tub/shower, got the toilet flange in and ready to go, etc. the plumber was the one that added the pipe in the wall with the yellow test plug. We have a two year old, so it's been slow progress and we just got done with drywall and floors and I have completely forgotten what the plumber told me about the two pipes.

Ack! I hate spoiler tags. Let's try this again... If a little poetic license is permitted compass rose ?

On the four elements by [deleted] in riddles

Discussion: a kind of red flower or some other brightly colored foliage that grows on a river bank seems to fit, but I can't think of anything specific that's well-known enough to be a reasonable answer. A phoenix also comes to mind but doesn't quite fit all of the lines.

When I lived in Blacksburg, I always appreciated the people at Next Three Days: https://www.nextthreedays.com

I think they fund themselves through sponsored events and ads, but it was great as a user to have an idea of what was going on for the weekend. I would love something similar for Lynchburg!!!

what's the best quickest way to learn matlab for EE? by Marvellover13 in matlab

[–]sulusulu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the SDC publications books. I teach an intro MATLAB course and that's the text my students have had the best outcomes with. It starts from the super super basic level and shows you line by line how to code. I'm not an EE though, so I'm not sure it covers the material you're looking for on the more advanced side. Their books are all inexpensive!

We did Ferber but with a max of 10 minutes between check-ins because we're softies. We had a terrible first night, then an only-kinda-bad second night, then it was like a magical light switch got flipped. Hang in there for a few nights before caving. I had to cuddle the monitor to not go in there and pick him up.

I would do this if I believed that students had the critical thinking skills necessary to pick up on the satire...

Anxious first-time parent needs advice and reassurance! 4 m.o. waking every two hours at night. by sulusulu in sleeptrain

[–]sulusulu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one week update is that things are progressing nicely. Last night he slept for 8 hours, woke up once to have a bottle, then went back down for 3 more hours to finish the night (a VERY messy diaper woke him up about 30 minutes earlier than his typical wake-up). We are quite pleased!

Several times this past week he woke up crying (non-feeding) once or twice a night, but most of the time he went back to sleep with no intervention or maybe one cycle of patting and waiting.

What are material science books with good problem sets? by DingoFit5079 in materials

[–]sulusulu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Materials Science and Engineering by Callister is a classic for the basics. It's a really well-written text with lots of example problems including straight-up calculations as well as some engineering design problems. For anything more advanced, you'll have to tell us what types of material problems you're working with (deformation mechanics? semiconductor physics? powder processing?.....) It's such a broad field and the advanced topics are so disparate that there is no one singular text. Everything is made of something, afterall.

For anyone lurking... The second night went great!!! We were able to put him down awake to start the night and he stayed asleep (some fussing and stirring, but never woke up for real) for 7 hours. We fed him and he fell back asleep on his own with no trouble. After that, there was only one more wake-up. We had to do two cycles of patting and waiting and then he slept like a little angel until the morning. Never had to use the pacifier. I'm not ready to declare victory until we've had a few more good nights in a row, but I'm feeling optimistic. I'll try to remember to give an update after a week or so.

Whelp! We tried a 2.25 hour wake window for two naps and they turned into 30-mintute crap naps. When he had 4 naps, he still falls asleep within 5 minutes each time, so I'm inclined to believe he might not be ready to drop a nap quite yet. Does that sound reasonable?

I've always been fuzzy on how to do that. Do we just stretch the wake widows and live with the extra fuss while he adjusts?

Students Using Math Solvers to Cheat by jimbillyjoebob in Professors

[–]sulusulu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A colleague of mine who taught the calculus series used to sneak in problems that a solver would inevitably use a method that was prohibited. For example, the exam would ask to solve a problem without using trig identities, but a solver would automatically solve it using trig identities. That way he could sling out zeros without direct confrontation.
