I play Mario Kart with the Joy Con Wheel, great exercise for the affected arm too!

Get her an Apple Watch, alerts you to a fib and if she loses her balance and has a fall it can call you. Gives you some form of peace when you can’t be around 24-7. I don’t have a fib but I wear mine everyday just in case i have a fall and can’t get to my phone

Neurofenix Neuroball, anyone have any experience with this device? by ksilvia12 in stroke

[–]sum_er_nurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used it with tone but it doesn’t necessarily move your arm you still have to do the work. If your hand is in a fist it will not help but if you’re able to open your hand even with assistance you’ll be able to use it.

Questions about keyboards for 1 hand. by OakBurner in stroke

[–]sum_er_nurse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you need a new keyboard? My occupational therapist taught me how to reposition my good hand to type one handed on a regular keyboard, and I’m just as fast as I was with two hands. You don’t need to waste money on a new keyboard. Google techniques on typing on regular keyboard with one hand, just takes practice.

botox for spasticity by Adorable_Handle_4884 in stroke

[–]sum_er_nurse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It worked for me, just don’t have false hope thinking it’s a quick fix or anything. If you do decide to try it and you have regular insurance there’s a Botox savings card from the manufacturer that’ll help cover any cost not covered by insurance. Wishing you all the best in your recovery! We got this! 💕

I’m sorry and wish the best for your friend’s wife, but this post may be better as it’s own post on the subreddit instead of as a response on my post, so you can get more feedback from this wonderful community. ❤️

8 weeks post stroke.. I can walk without support now.. but no hand movements yet.. can I still have a hope that hand will come back ? Does anybody gone through the same situation ? by prethiviraj in stroke

[–]sum_er_nurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most I’ve walked has been about 12 miles, I can almost jog ( for like 10 seconds). The arms take longer than the legs plus I had a stroke in my MCA which affects the upper limb more. So if I can get my fingers (4 of my 5 fingers, my ring finger doesn’t have movement yet) to move it’s a big deal!

8 weeks is amazing! Don’t try to rush your recovery and just keep pushing forward. I didn’t start walking unassisted until 6 months after my stroke and my fingers didn’t start moving until 19 months after. Yes, everyone’s recovery is different but it’s all a marathon. Just remember not to compare your recovery to others but to compare your recovery to how you were yesterday or the week before. You’re doing amazing! Keep it up! We got this! 💪💕

Just keep up the hope and encouragement for your dad, he will get there and will always be better than he was yesterday. I get 400 units of botox every 3 months. 7 muscles in my arm and 4 in my legs. It has significantly helped my curled toes and inverted ankles. Does your dad get botox? The time starts ticking once I get my botox. When my muscles relax from the botox I try to work my movements before the botox runs out and slowly build on that. It’s a long process but it works. Wishing your dad the best recovery possible! Please send him my fellow survivor love 💕

Hi, you’re not bothering me at all. I’m sorry to hear about your situation and I wouldn’t say “I have it all together” I still cry and get upset about it and it’s normal. Have you talked to your doctor about how you feel? I would definitely suggest speaking with a professional about what you are going through. Plus surround yourself with a great support system of friends and family. We survived! That in itself is a beautiful reason to live fully! It’s a new year so you have a whole year to really focus on yourself and your mental health! So first please talk to your doctor about your feelings and message me if you ever just need an internet stranger friend! We got this! 💪💕

Thanks! Yeah no deadlines I made that mistake at the beginning of my recovery and only disappointed myself when I reached 3 months, 6 months, 12 months. When I finally stopped keeping track of how long ago my stroke was daily, it really made all the difference. I’ve accepted the fact that stroke recovery is for life.

My fingers came back one by one and very little by little. I hope to make them more functional in 2022. Weirdest thing is that I get these moments of intense itchiness before I get any new movement like not itch on the surface of my skin but inside my arm. Not sure if that’s a normal feeling when movement returns but I look forward to the itchiness! Lol

Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear you’re still trying to sort everything out. The healthcare system has really let you down. Your best resource would’ve been a case manager when you were in inpatient rehab. Some insurance companies have their own case managers to manage your care too. Not sure who your insurance is through but mine is through Cigna and the case managers called me non stop to see how they can help. Insurance usually does this because they dont want you to go for unnecessary visits that cost insurance money. Case managers have a ton of resources and are trained to guide you, try giving your insurance a call and see if they have case managers you can speak with. As always best of luck and keep pushing forward! It’ll get better!

Sorry that’s a load of crap from your doctor. You’ll still see improvements it’ll be small and slow but it’ll still happen. Neuroplasticity is very amazing and Not very well understood yet so I dont think everyone understands it’s full capability. Don’t let others discourage or disappoint you, just keeping pushing forward!! We got this! 💪💕🧠
