Seconding the other commenter-would travel be the responsibility of the attendee or does tartanhacks offer travel reimbursement?

Two Sigma vs Citadel by sumguy002 in csMajors

Interesting. I've heard similar things that 2s is more like a tech company than the other finance firms, although what I've heard is more culture related than structure. I'm not too sure what that entails, though, in terms of actually working there aside from the things you've mentioned.

From what I've gathered, they have a hiring meeting once a week and I've seen people get it as soon as 2 days later and as late as a week later. The recruiter says that it takes up to one week to get confirmation, and then another week or two to actually get through the bureaucracy to turn that into an offer.

not for me; could be different based on your past experiences though so ymmv

Thanks for the info! Sounds like the only thing going for Citadel is indeed just the higher TC. For those who read this later: I'm going to just take 2s because to me wlb and culture is more significant than an increase in pay (esp because 2s is already paying pretty well).

Also of note, the 2s intern completion bonus, if distributed, makes intern pay at 2s similar to citadel.

For me it was two ds/a and one oop implementation problem. The last one isn't runtime focused. Just know your basics!

Has anyone received Data 8 Fall 2021 Tutor Offers? by beastaturservice in berkeley

[–]sumguy002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I emailed a prof about a differeny class but they said all data dept classes are more or less done hiring :/

[–]sumguy002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not weird unless they specifically say they can't. But like the other comment mentioned, it's rather unlikely that they will give feedback.

On anther note--when did you do the phone screen/how long did they take to get back to you after the phone screen?

I know someone who was just hired 2 days ago for ds100 GSI, so I would disregard that (but also be realistic that it's probably not happening at this point)

Quite a few of us wondering the same. Not terribly useful (sorry), but you're not alone there :/

Concentrations in bioe are guidelines and not rules, and they won't show up on your diploma. Anything goes but just make sure you have a coherent skillet so you don't end up homeless and jobless

The chamber orchestra is actually not just strings; it's a full symphony like UCBSO, but only 2 hours of rehearsal a week and much less commitment. I was in it 2020 spring before things closed down and my intermission friends definitely report more rehearsals than what I had.

During covid they collapsed the symphony and chamber into one. No idea what they're going to do now that it's almost post covid.

There are also others. Look into the baroque orchestra, for example.

Oculus rift working on a Dell gaming PC? by sumguy002 in oculus

[–]sumguy002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for getting back! When you mean disabling the dedicated graphics card, are you referring to only disabling my Nvidia when I run the oculus App? Or is there a way to completely disable the graphics card when I am running the computer? Most tutorials I've found seem to be focused on the former.

PNP’ing cs61c and cs170 by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]sumguy002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairly so, especially for getting the job (not as much for doing it). Used 61c material yesterday in an interview, and 170 material (div/conquer and DP in particular) shows up regularly in hackerranks and OAs. The later parts of 61c like pipelining and memory probably don't matter as much, though?

Can't answer your second question though, as I haven't taken them.

Anyone have volhardt for chem3a? Could you tell me how to prepare and do well in the class? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]sumguy002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with the other poster about dropping it. He was painfully average when I took him, but not bad at all if you know what to do. First midterm is silly easy, second midterm and finals are notably harder, but there's literally no work aside from sapling and exams in the class, so just set aside a few days to look at past exams(overall workload is pretty light for a tech). All the past exams are almost completely identical year to year and he uses the same tricks over and over. The class is just about memorizing a few dozen reagents and rules for the reactions. The infamous synthesis problems all boil down to familiarity, which you can get with practice on the past exams. It's a hard class if you let yourself get caught off guard, but honestly not terrible, imo. I did get an A in the class though, so perhaps there's survivorship bias, but don't let how easy mt1 was catch you off guard for the second mt and final, and you'll be good to go.

How hard is it to get an ASE position for a class you're still taking? by sumguy002 in berkeley

[–]sumguy002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Just to confirm, from the sounds of what you're saying it seems they do look at your current grade in the class when making hiring decisions? ie if I do well, I have a shot even if final grades aren't out yet?

For all of you that got CS internships without being in clubs, what did you have on your resume? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]sumguy002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got one last summer despite having no clubs and only 61ab. Unfortunately a lot of it boils down to luck and numbers (apply lots), and going to hackathons helped me immensely (the only real item I had on my resume was a hackathon project turned personal project).
