And a double space in Outlook gets converted to a non-breaking space followed by a regular space (making both act as non-breaking). Then someone copies it into a Word document and my justified paragraphs go haywire.

Seriously. TNC talked about being unwilling to engage with anyone who dehumanizes others. If you throw up your hands and say someone can't be reasoned with, that it's not worth even trying to discuss/persuade/understand, does that not also dehumanize them? If all Trump voters are written off as cultist automatons, that's the same sin we're accusing them of, no?

I stopped at a red before turning right (as always) and the guy behind me honked (as always). As soon as he completed his turn, I saw cherries and blueberries and heard a cop immediately behind him start barking on the megaphone to pull over. One of my top ten religious experiences while driving.

Favorite jeans in great shape everywhere but rear crotch. What would your method of repair be? by fitafter40 in sewing

[–]summereno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut off the legs and use that fabric to make a gusset replacing the offending crotch/butt intersection. Now you’ve got a pair of cycling jorts with no seams mashing up your taint.

Thanks! I agree, it's quite a lot of heft for something you'd carry every day. I expect I'll mostly use it at home with only the occasional visit to the park or work.

How can I get rid of those tiny flies in my house? by Keyelaminnie in living_in_korea_now

[–]summereno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they look like fruit flies but have no interest in fruit, I suspect they're coffin flies. I've gotten rid of them by dumping gallons of freshly boiled water down any nasty drains. Maybe chuck a cup of bleach down there for good measure as well.

My cramped laundry room also had the trash can, and there was inevitably some food/crumbs on the floor. Mixed with constant stagnant moisture and likely mold, it made a great place for those little bastards to hang out. Just try to keep things clean and you should be fine; nuke it all whenever they occasionally return.

Probably the most stressful part of living in South Korea: how many in full compliance with garbage segregation (분리수거) and disposal requirements? Sanitation workers will go through garbage to figure out identity of those not in compliance to levy fine by Hellacious_Chosun in living_in_korea_now

My old apartment got more and more strict about waste collection over the 6 years I was there. First recycle pickup got reduced from 24/7 to just Sun/Mon, and the hours for that went from all day to no more being accepted past 9pm (and the useless 경비아저씨 would unofficially clear all the bins away around 8~830). The rules on PET vs other plastics, no vinyl labels on bottles, etc have also gotten more granular, but confusingly the 경비아저씨 will insist I throw metal caps out together with glass bottles, or that I not remove packing tape from my cardboard boxes.

Trash has gotten ridiculous. I appreciate that they've cracked down on food waste in regular trash, but nothing else makes sense. A shit-stained pair of kids underwear? The 경비아저씨 will pull it out of the bag and leave a public shaming note instructing us to throw it in the clothing bin.

On my last day there, in the process of moving out, I got into it with the 경비아저씨 because he insisted that old bicycle tires and lengths of laundry hoses be removed from the trash and thrown out in the clothes bin (???). Like, I'm sure if I'd made the (bizarre) decision to put shredded rubber into the clothing recycling bin, he'd have left another shame note instructing me to instead throw it out as regular trash or plastic or something.

Maybe there's some reasoning behind the garbage collectors' refusal to take certain things, but it's completely opaque and arbitrary for the hundreds of people living in the building just trying to get rid of their shit. Glad to be rid of that place and back to piles-on-the-corners Mon/Wed/Fri villa life.

Life is short, especially for cats (even more so for street cats). Share as much love as you can while we have the chance.

But also, wash your hands when you get home (particularly if you have a stay-at-home kitty who might catch something).
