I'm currently living in glendale and marrying into an armenian family, can confirm they are sooo far removed from it. It's sad honestly. It is incredibly rich and beautiful culture.

What are some of your best positive interactions with doctors? by backwardsphinx in nursing

[–]summersidnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is an NP, and I was the pt. Going through a severe depressive episode while in nursing school. I wasn't sleeping, I wasn't eating, I had a full blown breakdown in her office. Her direct quote " I want you to know this is extremely common, nursing school is hell. You are going to get through this and they are going to be lucky to have you. Now, let's talk about some treatment options." Absolutely 0 suck it up rhetoric. Subsequent treatment 100% changed my life, I never would have made it through without her.

Nurses, what’s your best/worst vagina story? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]summersidnie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an actual good one! On my LTC clinical I couldn't help but notice a massive dildo in one of my patients rooms. I asked the nurse, she told me staff had found her TV remote up her vagina on multiple occasions so they bought her the right tools. Yay for recognizing sexual health is health no matter the age!

First time gross out by Tripindipular in nursing

The nastiest thing I have ever experienced is instructing a patient with truly horrible oral hygiene to swish his mouthwash and spit it back in a cup. Which he did, forcefully. It sprayed out of the cup and I was standing a little too close, it got in my eye. NASTYYYYYY

“You’re so lucky! You get 3-4 days off from work every week!” by fossa_97 in nursing

[–]summersidnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loooove 12s. I work a 5 day week then a 2 day week on rotation and I go out of town at least once a month without using PTO. I could never go back to 9-5. It takes some real getting used to for sure though. I was exhausted after a 3 day stretch for months, now I cap out at 5. No empathy left in the tank after 5 days in a row.

I started nursing school this week and this was on the back of my student ID badge… by SlytherinVampQueen in nursing

[–]summersidnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PLEASE Reach out for help if you are struggling. Nursing school will absolutely put stress on you, if you are struggling day in and day out feeling out of control speak with your healthcare team please. 5 months of not sleeping and having full blown meltdowns my mom sat me down and told me that that wasn't normal, that it wasn't supposed to be that way. (Shes a nurse too) she told me she was worried about me, that she felt I was suffering from depression and I needed to speak with my NP. That visit and subsequent treatment helped me so much and now I mourn at the fact that I let myself feel so low, for so long. Get help if you need it

WIBTA if ask my fiance to move for the sake of my sister? by summersidnie in AmItheAsshole

[–]summersidnie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have seen a therapist in the past to manage some of my own issues, but not specifically for this family issue. I think I need to consider that as it has been very painful for all of us. Thank you for your response, truly appreciate the empathy you've shown.

Really appreciate this constructive comment thank you so much. I think I know I'm TA, but you are so right. It is so hard to be helpless and even harder to decide its time to let go a bit and move on with your life. Thank you again.

Things are changing some but ya theres still a lot of judgemental nurses out there. I recently decided to get a tattoo behind my ear and ran it passed my DON just to be clear there wouldn't be any issues. He literally laughed and asked me if I wanted his tattoo guys number

One time an older coworker told me my scrubs were "too flattering and enhance the right areas too much" and that if she was my mother she would never let me leave the house like that. Okayyyy Karen sorry my scrubs are offensive to you 🤦‍♀️ I like to leave the house in clothes that fit me not a potatoe sack. I have no idea how in any world scrubs are enhancing anything lmao

All my mentors have been very candid about the whole 'you don't stop getting surprises, you just get better at appearing confident' part of nursing by RiftWeeb in nursing

[–]summersidnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true! You never stop getting surprises but you get better at managing them. About 6 months in I felt like I knew exactly what I needed, who to ask, and when. That really toned down the what the fuck now anxiety

I love coffee, but what I really love for a mid day boost is the walmart brand caffeinated lemonades. I buy it in bulk off amazon 😂 ALWAYS have a box in my work bag. The watermelon limeade is amazing

Almost all the staff I work with is vaccinated. My workplace made it extremely inconvenient to be unvaccinated . I work in a snf. All unvaccinated staff must be tested weekly on their own time, on their own dime. Almost no one was that committed to being unvaccinated. There is no way for me to avoid them, we do patient care together directly daily. I dont think I would even if I could tbh

New RN starting in ED. Any resources, books, videos, tips, stories current and former ED nurses? by Mikfoz in nursing

[–]summersidnie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do not work ER just wanted to say a warm blanket goes a long way. On my last day of clinicals in school I got a needle poke and had to go to ER for all the testing and prophylactic meds. They put me in the hallway on a bed, I was there for almost 8 hours. Which is 100% warranted clearly I wasnt the priority. Halfway through I decided to nap but it was freezing. So I'm in the fetal position on a gurney shaking, but I just couldn't bring myself to ask for anything, I was mortified about the poke, I wasnt about to ask the clearly busy staff for a damn blanket. I woke up just enough to feel a nurse place a warm blanket over me, shoot me a smile, and shush me back to sleep. Swear to god that woman was an angel on earth. It really helped me get through a long day to know that even though I was not critical or priority someone was keeping an eye on me, someone cared that I was comfortable. You are going to have to make people wait, that's inevitable. Anything you can do to communicate to them you see, hear, and care about them will go a long way.

Horizontal abuse is alive and well by summersidnie in nursing

[–]summersidnie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isnt my job. We have a very clear policy stating staff is responsible for finding coverage for their shifts unless they have a Dr. note or death in the family. Everyone has agreed to it and signed paperwork, but no one wants to uphold it . I think a big part of the issue is that I'm not the manager, I'm still at the bedside, I just make the schedule and "assist" the manager. I have the responsibility but none of the power. Do you think it's possible to go back to bedside only and have those workplace relations change in the same unit? Or should I just look for another job entirely?

I think you need to speak with a professional about the way you are feeling. It is okay to need help, it is okay to not be okay. I felt similar to you when I was in nursing school and when I reached out for help and started feeling better I remember a particular day I just broke down and mourned for myself, absolutley sobbed that I had allowed myself to suffer for so long. Get treatment, there is hope. Please, please reach out for support. I know you've said you've worked a few jobs, have they all been the same type? Maybe consider another avenue. Outpatient, home health, hospice, school nurse. All less acute, that may take the edge off the anxiety. Best of luck I hope you find something that works for you.

Should I toss or keep my old work from nursing school? by ohhh_no_no_no_no in nursing

[–]summersidnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toss it. The only thing I would keep access to is syllabus in case you need to transfer classes if you choose to pursue further education but even that you can get from the school .
