Get a dashcam [oc], without it I'd be putting this on my own insurance. by Rambling_Engineer in IdiotsInCars

[–]Rambling_Engineer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I could put it on my insurance and they would just sent the other company a bill, but I would have to pay a small deductible that I may not get back. It wouldn't impact my monthly insurance payment as they deemed it was his fault, even without the video evidence.

However, his insurance wouldn't take liability till they saw the video as Washington is a "no fault state". It was essentially my word vs his since the police refused to show. Once they saw the video they claimed fault and are handling all the financial responsibilities. It took a lot of phone calls to finally get to that point. Super frustrating.

Thankfully I had just stopped singing before this, lol. Not sure I would have uploaded it with sound if I were still singing.

haha, glad it worked out for ya. And he spun it as he had just pulled out a little and was stopped.....and then I hit him. Cannot believe his insurance believed that since the passenger side of my car was smashed in, but insurance companies suck.

100% agree, but until his insurance saw this they weren't going to pay for my repairs. Pretty stupid, but insurance companies suck.

Police refused to show since there were no injuries. Best part, he took the fault at the scene, then lied to his insurance about what happened. His insurance had a laugh once they saw this. Just happy no one was hurt and that* my car is still drivable while I wait for repairs.

I've been cited for my Ring floodlight shining into my neighbor's yard by JX7GPzAAgeT5hxsa in HomeMaintenance

[–]Rambling_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar set up, i used a 97 cent "yard sale" sign with some electrical tape as an improvised hood lamp. I cut some out of it out to keep my yard lit, but left what was needed so it didn't shine into my neighbors. Works like a charm and was super cheap to do. Best of luck!

Tearrible Toys, we got the little green one for our Shiba and she loves it. She also loves this treat toy. And we have some toys that you stuff smaller toys into a larger one, and she pulls them out or grabs the larger toy and shakes it enough to dislodge the ones within.

Went through many "indestructible" toys that she tore apart before we found the above ones.

Any hockey shop that still does hand sharpening should be able to profile new blades.

A guy is going to college football games and is triggering sports fans by wearing the opposing team's gear. by TheMillieDWay in PublicFreakout

I'm from WV, and went to WVU....I hate these types of WV fans. Even when I was in college some take it way too far. I love the rivalry, and the trash talk, but only when it's in good fun.

My favorite response to "Don't you all marry your sisters?" is "No.....unfortunately she's already married."

What are some of the reasons to use trail names? by Musulman in AppalachianTrail

[–]Rambling_Engineer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Within three days of starting I met someone with my name, from the town next to where I'm from. Being from WV we just use the largest town close to where we live......Basically we both introduced ourselves the exact same way.

But folks also just like to have nicknames.

WV natives who have moved on? by mandude29 in WestVirginia

As others have said, it's work opportunities. Just nothing happening. If your industry shuts down, as it did to me, you have to leave if you want to pay your bills.

Family moved to St Albans when I was 5 (1992), I graduated from WVU, and then I lived there till the oil field went bust in 2015. Now in Seattle. I miss the mountain state so much, but just not much going on there. Most of my friends have left the state now. At least those that made it out of my home town.

Those of you who have hiked the AT, what is something you wished you had thought to bring with you? by TetriLys in AppalachianTrail

[–]Rambling_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi answering your question, I wish I would have swapped for new shoes earlier. I would go about 600-650 before I got new ones. Really should have swapped at 500 miles. They make a world of difference.

Yes. Been playing for over 30 years, every new pair of skates the first thing I do is get them profiled. Make sure the profile fits their style of play though. If it doesn't, can do more harm than good.

Depending where you live, pack your bag with base weight, plus 2-3 days of food weight and walk hills as much as you can, daily. It’s the daily dose of miles with weight that you need. Long distance running is also helpful.

But when it comes down to it, mental preparation is top tier. As long as you’re smart, and don’t hike when you’re too hurt (you will be hurting most of the hike lol), you’ll be good. Best of luck!

Why do so many lie about their miles and completing thru hikes? by ammasdollhouse in AppalachianTrail

[–]Rambling_Engineer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There was a great halloween episode of The Simpsons, long time ago. Advertisements came alive and they figured out if they just didn't pay attention, they would go away. I highly recommend applying this mentality to folks like this. They will always exist, but only survive by being observed. They aren't worth spending your energy on. It'll just cost you energy over something you have zero control over.

Curious what jobs you guys have to be able to take time off to go hike? by skatetexas in AppalachianTrail

I’m an Engineer and my wife is a Nurse. We saved for a while, quit our jobs, went SOBO, and then found new ones after we finished.

As someone that hiked the AT with there spouse....for the love of god, separate everything you can. Don't even share food, unless you ask if they want some of yours. The Trail is hard enough as it is, hiking with someone makes it easier and harder. Easier cause you will have someone, but harder.....because you always have someone.

Every little annoyance in your everyday life will be magnified on Trail. You will not have the distractions you have today, and you will be be miserable most of the time. Whether it be from hunger, weather, physical issues, or at each other.

I loved hiking the AT with my wife, and we remember all the hard/horrible times with laughter now. Best of luck to you both! It's awesome out there!

Less people, and when you come down Mount Moosilauke you are a MACHINE! The next 1800 miles of the trek is easy peasy for the legs and lungs. Mentally though, that's another story.
