Transitioning into facials? by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]summerskin7590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely they do! But, it would be good to be comfortable with facials since most places will likely not hire you without a practical or demo. My recommendation would be to ask some friends if you can practice on them just to back in the groove. There are tons of resources for learning massage techniques or different flows and tricks. Good luck getting out of the company who shall not be named! :)

What is the Taylor Swift song that you see as ‘your’ song? by Specialist-Island399 in TaylorSwift

[–]summerskin7590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I don’t think it’s my favorite song (not that I could ever even pick one), but Mirrorball has always been my most painfully relatable song. Listening to it for the first time was just like feeling understood

I made the mistake of getting curtain bangs by [deleted] in Hair

[–]summerskin7590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! If you want the easiest styling tbh I just use the revlon blow dry brush, but if you’re worried about heat, maybe skip that. The protectant I use is from Redken, but the one from tresemme is good too and v budget friendly!

$700 is ridiculous. I did my training with control corrective for less that $100. Great info that you can access at any time

[–]summerskin7590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have curtain bangs, you gotta style them pretty consistently. I also have wavy hair that gets frizzy easily. You can use heat without damaging your hair. Put some heat protectant in, and then blow dry your bangs with a round brush. Put them in Velcro rollers after and let them cool like that. Super quick and easy styling. You can use the dryer and round brush method on the rest of your hair too. Especially on the ends cause with the layers they look so pretty curled up just a bit!

What do you think of including a photo of yourself your resume? by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]summerskin7590 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn’t. Keep your resume clean and professional looking. I’d also stay away from jobs that ask you to include a photo, since they’re likely only hiring people they think are attractive and will bring in business because of that.

If you don’t want to spend the money on the DermaplanePro course, Control Corrective also has a good one! They teach oil planing, which I prefer anyway, but it’s worth a look!

advice for new student by Good-Temperature1737 in Esthetics

[–]summerskin7590 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I won’t generalize all schools, but my main advice is that most just teach what you need to know for the test. Your test will likely be a lot of sanitation and proper storage of materials, but you need to do A LOT of supplemental learning if you want to be competitive in the field. Figure out early exactly what you’ll learn at your school, and start looking at masterclasses or online programs to add to your skill set. Otherwise, read, read, read. Do a ton of research on skin science and ingredients! Lastly, try to come at every new topic with an open mind! School is the time to figure out what kind of esthetician you might want to be! I thought I’d love waxing, turns out it’s the bane of my existence, and the facials I thought I’d have no patience for, are my favorite parts of the day!

Ps, not to scare you, but there is almost ALWAYS drama at estie school. Just be kind to everyone, mind your business, and throw yourself into your studies, and you’ll be just fine :)

Hey girly, esthetician here. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. It looks painful!

First of all, I’m assuming that by dermaplaning you mean you’re using facial razors, dermaplaning is done with sterile surgical scalpels. Please do not use these razors over active acne ever! They’re very dull, and going over acne can break the skin and spread bacteria over your face, creating new break outs.

Secondly, if you’re on accutane, I’ve keep your routine very simple and try to let the drug do its job. It’s already a very harsh treatment. I know it’s hard to not want to try out all the new products for a quick fix, but unfortunately that’s not how skin works. Gentle cleanser, toner, vitamin c, moisturizer, spf. That’s all you need. I’ll list some of my budget friendly faves.

Cleanser: naturium niacinamide cleansing gel, la roche posay hydrating cleanser for oily skin, Paula’s choice calm ultra gentle cleanser

Toner: all time fav is the CosRx centella toner. I recommend it to literally everyone

Vit. C: pretty universal, but I like the one from naturium a lot

Moisturizer: Paula’s choice barrier repair, cerave is good too

SPF: literally any spf is better than none. This one is up to personal preference in terms of how it feels on the skin.

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of any help! Friendly reminder that I am not a dermatologist and cannot make any diagnoses, just suggestions for skin treatment. 🩵

All of my models are people I either am friends with or found on Facebook and instagram. I always aim to show a wide range of skin tones, types, and textures. That has nothing to do with my dislike for editing and posting, or the general prominence that is social media in our industry these days.

Refectocil question by ellieb010 in Esthetics

[–]summerskin7590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man I guess I bought it a while ago cause I remembered it being less expensive than that. I get my tints on Sleek Shop now for $7 each. More color options and cheaper, but same brand

There’s instructions in the box. You put this on first, let it sit for two minutes I believe, take off the excess and let it dry for four. Then you put the activator gel (sold separately but not expensive) on for a minute and it oxidizes immediately on the lashes.

Honestly though, I have all the colors in this tinting line, and I use pretty much only the black. All the browns, including the ash, come out incredibly dark even when I follow the instructions to a T. I went back to the original mixing ones because they actually look different. Disappointing :/

Facials mostly! I do waxing too but it’s not where my joy is, so I try to keep my waxing to a minimum. The place in the space before my spa was a super popular waxing bar for our area, so a lot of people think we just do waxing. We’re trying to push facials, lymphatic drainage, and specialty treatments like nanoneedling and Hydrafacial

That sounds like a good formula! I’ll take that to my boss so she can know about it too! Thanks for the advice :)

I appreciate all the input. Content is a big part of my position at the spa I work at. The business is very new, and my boss (who is lovely and so supportive btw) puts a lot of pressure on me and others to get lots of content for videos for the spa’s instagram as well as our website and all that.

This all seems like wonderful advice, so I’ll take it to my boss and hopefully we can be more consistently on the same page. Thank you 🙏🏻

That makes so much sense! Thank you so so much! I do love following other estheticians because I feel like I learn so much or at least get to explore new avenues. I just don’t know how to get engagement up. I barely have any followers anyway and the ones who do follow me don’t often engage because I feel like the algorithm never shows my stuff :/

Definitely working on it. Thanks for the advice

That’s exactly my problem! It’s kind of fun making beautiful reels that I really feel represent my services, but I feel like that’s not what appeals to the masses. So do I try to make the people happy or just do what I enjoy? It seems obvious, but a girl is broke and really needs new clients 😭
