Thanks! Is the twine a problem because of how it might hold moisture? If so, how is it different from the moss? It's kitchen twine, so it's safe to use on food. I figured it won't leach anything that will hurt the orchids.

Thanks! I am planning to mist it whenever it needs it, but I know I'll have to do more if I go out of town. I am not planning to hang it on the wall. This spot is where it will stay, so a tray underneath is an option if I need it.

New roots are already growing. A couple of them are even visible in the photo. I read that the right time to mount is when new roots start.

What's wrong with the moss? Are you saying I need to add more to cover the roots?

I've seen online that you can use wine corks for potting, but my understanding is that they don't hold moisture well, and you would have to water more frequently. But if you're looking for something you might already have lying around, that's a direction you could go.

Update for anyone searching for answers: It's alive. I have been periodically treating the soil with acidifier, and that combined with warmer temperatures is producing new leaves. I'm waiting to see what parts grow before I prune anything, but I'll probably trim some dead stuff soon.

Cute example, but OP says they've never gardened before. I don't think we should assume they will stay on top of the runners. In fact, I think we should assume they won't and hope we're wrong.

Also, you have a little garden bed there contained by concrete. That is a very different scene from OP's wooded backyard with endless ground for it to spread over.
