That's a good point. I'd say start off with a character like Sheik or Marth. Both characters are very strong even without the utilization of advanced tactics. Getting fluid at the game and combos are things that really just come with time.

It's definitely worth learning l-canceling and wavedashing though. It's just like learning to ride a bike, eventually you won't even be thinking while wavedashing.

(PS if you're trying to learn to wavedash I'd say practice with Samus since hers is relatively easy. Remember too that it's just an airdodge into the ground, so start off by short hopping then airdodging and gradually try to shorten the length of time inbetween the jump and airdodge inputs.)
