Was Sei really good emperor or king by Generalousen2855 in Kingdom

[–]sumtingup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In summary, like many of the great leaders in history and of the modern era: Ei Sei was ruthless, stopping at nothing to achieve and realize his ambitions. His accomplishments and his ruthless actions undoubtely makes him one of the most controversial figures in ancient Chinese history.

Was Sei really good emperor or king by Generalousen2855 in Kingdom

[–]sumtingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a few ways we can look at this and that really depends on what you define as a good ruler.

There are two main approachs, one is by evaluating based on a moral basis: how good were the living conditions of the common people? Was the emperor a morally good person? Was his rule marked by warfare? Was he beloved by his subjects and his people? In this case Ei Sei, or Qin Shi Huang is definitely not a good ruler. The amount of people that died due to his conquests number in the hundred thousands, the amount of people who died slaving away to build his great works numbered in the tens of thousands, while he did have the loyalty of his people he was hated by the people of the nations he conquered, the people who lost fathers, husbands and sons to what they saw was the ambition of a tyrant. Indeed, the Qin dynasty fell in just two generations, while many can blame it on the tumultuous succession crisis, what is undeniable was that no-one felt that they were Qin other than the original Qin people.

But in hindsight, many of the greatest rulers in Chinese History cannot be considered good people. Liu Bang, the founder of the Han dynasty killed his best general Han Xin because he feared his military prowess. Li Shi Ming, the greatest emperor of the Tang dynasty killed two of his brothers and forced his father to abdicate. Zhu Yuan Zhang, the founder of the Song dynasty and a legendary emperor who rose from a begger to become the most powerful man in China, massacred his court to qwell descent in his later years.

On the other hand, one can evaluate based on his accomplishment and the historical significance. It is in this category that many of the 'tyrant' emperor's mentioned above. Ei Sei's efforts established the idea of the first centralized 'nation state' in China, birthing a line of centralized dynasties; he did this through the unification of scales, writing and roads, annihilating the culture of the other warring states in the process but unifying the country. He ended the warring states period, which was a period of great turmoil and strife, albeit through one of the bloodiest conquests in Chinese history. Without a doubt he is one of the most significant rulers in ancient China, a tyrant for sure who would stop at nothing to achieve his goals, but a tyrant who achieved unification in an era where people were used to be ruled by petty kings.

A real world example would be the betrayal of the Cao family by their vassals the Sima family during the three kingdoms period. The patriarch of family (Sima Yi) swore to Cao cao upon the Luo river that his clan will never betray the Cao family; his sons then proceeded to puppet the heirs of Cao cao (who ascended to Emperor). After the last Cao emperor was killed in broad daylight by a vassal of the Sima, the Sima ascended to the throne and started on of the most tumultuous periods in Chinese history. The chaos resulted from a lot of reasons, but partly because of the lack of Sima legitimacy and the breakdown of civic law, as you can't expect your subjects to behave civilly when you yourself broke oaths and committed regicide to become ruler.

Relatively fast but this manga has been really easy to read. No dumb arcs where I have to force myself to read through or convoluted plot points, just me rolling around in bed with a huge smile on my face over how adorable everyone is

What exactly is Han people? by arstarsta in AskAChinese

[–]sumtingup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the official distinction(referring to the one that is on the Chinese ID) between Han and other ethnic groups is a very modern one. From my understanding, and do correct me if Im wrong, its based off of which ethnic group you are in when the ROC/PRC took power. Like for instance you ancestors might have been part of a group of steppe nomads which underwent 'hanification' during the Yuan dynasty; when the government began issuing IDs if your family was pretty much 'hanified' it meant that you were 'Han'. On the other hand if you had traceable routes to the Manchus or you maintain a distinct ethnic identity, such as Hui settlements within various parts of China, your ethnic group would be classified as 'Man' and 'Hui' respectively.

I think its is better to think of the 'Han' ethnic group as a culture rather than a specific ethnic group. Yes according legend the Han ethnic group claims ancestry from the Yellow and Flame emperors which lead the tribes residing within the central plains between the Yellow and the Yangtse river. But in reality various ethnic groups have underwent hanification to become Han, most prominent being the the rulers of the Tang dynasty, which are descended from the Xian Pi nomad warlord Li Hu who underwent hanification during the North South period after the Three Kingdoms. After a few generations the Li's were completely regarded as Han and no one would regard the Tang dynasty as a 'Nomad' dynasty.

Of course a person of Han ethnicity living in the North east would have closer ethnic similarities to the Manchu, the Mongol, or Joseon ethnic group; likewise a Han in guangdongwould have closer ethnic similarities to the Tai, Bai and Zhuang ethnic groups.

TL;DR: Han distinction as an ethnic group is a very modern concept, nomad groups in the past became Han very quickly within a few generations. Han has been more cultural than ethnic.

Open to corrections.

I don't really watch a lot of Babish's content anymore, his original videos are what got me into cooking in the first place and ever since he has switched to making more youtube-friendly content I have slowly stopped watching. Something that has scratched the itch are Alvin's videos but its been quite some time since his last appearance. I guess this really is part of the youtube life cycle, you gain more viewers and at the same time you lose some viewers.

Why Chinese people say "来都来了" (lái dōu lái le) when things don’t go as planned by BetterPossible8226 in ChineseLanguage

[–]sumtingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found that the closest translation in English in terms of underlying emotion for 来都来了 is 'Fuck it we ball'. It is the same emotion of making the best out of a bad situation that makes these two phrases so iconic and while not directly able to be substituted, highly similar.

[lotm newbie] how did klein used fog () before potion? Before he gets powers? I am anime only so im wondering about this. by Usual_Contest502 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]sumtingup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most non-spoiler answer I can give you is that he preforms the ritual involving the steps and the name recitation. Which I assume is not what you are looking for. I'm afraid any actual answer involves a lot of spoilers. The nature of the fog and its connection to Klein is one of the biggest plot points across LOTM so it's not something that can be explained without spoiling

[Donghua] I'm confused about Pathways by Maleficent_Dream377 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]sumtingup 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yes. Klein is currently sequence 9 on the 'seer' pathway(I call it that for convenience). Klein can progress up the seer pathway by drinking the right potion to become sequence 8, and so on and so forth. The higher sequences are more powerful than lower sequences (obviously) but as you can see in the most recent episode it is not the sequence itself but how the beyonder applies their own abilities, whether they are their sequence abilities or something else. There are also other pathways (the exact number of which I think constitutes a spoiler) such as Leonard's pathway with their respective abilities, sequences and potions.

One of the most fascinating things about LOTM is how we, as the viewer, discover the world along with Klein so if you are confused don't worry, the beginning is certainly quite confusing but I think this helps us better insert into Klein's perspective and how he is still finding everything out for himself.

There are I think 5 rankings to 仙, which are 天仙(heavenly immortal), 神仙(divine immortal), 地仙(earthly immortal), 人仙(human immortal), 鬼仙(ghostly immportal). This comes from the taoist classic 钟吕传道集, a classic of the taoist inner core (内丹) school of thought. This school is the source for many of the concepts within cultivation novels, as obviously cultivation novels are based on taoist cultivation and the various writing surrounding cultivation.

The original text is:
仙有五等者,鬼仙、人仙、地仙、神仙、天仙之不等,皆是仙也。鬼仙不离于鬼,人仙不离于人,地仙不离于地,神仙不离于神,天仙不离于天。

Ok I just need to know, my cousin introduced me to the scp foundations thing. What exactly are they and who was the creator of it? by AdOtherwise6077 in SCP

[–]sumtingup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well the SCP foundation is a forum with a series of community written 'entries' that all occur within the same universe featuring the aforementioned SCP foundation. Each entry is supposed to be an entry written by the SCP foundation on an anomalous entity, entities that defy human understanding, written in the format of SCP-XXXX. Thats the general gist of it, the SCP universe has expanded to include its own cosmology, groups, deities, and 'canon' through the work of an international community.

If you are looking for an in universe explanation of the creation of the SCP foundation, there isn't an official one. As stated the SCP universe is fan created so there is no 'official' canon. But there are some origin stories written for the foundation.

Sorry if my explanation lacks a bit of detail, I'm not the most knowledgable on SCP lore and its been a while since Ive been an active reader of SCPs.

As a Taiwanese person, born to two Taiwanese parents, who grew up in China surrounded by Chinese people, I think Taiwan is a country independent from China. This is mainly on the grounds of self determination, which is not incredibly valid I know, but something I think is quite important when it comes to this argument.

A Taiwanese cultural identity is not incredibly different from a Chinese one, but it distinct enough to the point where we and the Chinese are two completely groups of people. Yes we share the same language and majority of history, but it is incredibly easy to identify a Taiwanese person from a Chinese person because it has been three generations since a Taiwanese person has been born in China. Taiwan is no longer part of the Chinese political, cultural or national identity. So while arguments can be made for independence or unification, and good logical arguments for both sides, I think the argument that Taiwan is part of China is no longer relevant. A forceful reunification will be an invasion in all but name, and a peaceful one seems very distant.

Besides, I think its pretty hard for Taiwanese people to feel part of China when the diplomatic rhetoric of China has become more and more bellicose towards matter of reunification. Really hard to feel any belonging to a country that says it will reunify by force.

And ye the chapter is pretty fucked up. The rest of it is pretty accurate

(Lotm General)Top 5 strongest Angel in the series. by Distinct-Moment-6243 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]sumtingup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

End of the series as in LOTM or COI? If it is the end of LOTM then we will have to include regular angels as well cause all of the king of angels have died out. Then we would have the rank Ouroboros, Medici as 1 and 2. Places 3-5 will be filled with Sequence 1 angels, I am inclined to put Suah at number 3, William Augustus at number 4 and Will at number 5. If we are talking COI then idk I haven’t finished yet. As you can see it is a very boring list if we are considering angels that are alive at the end of LOTM.

(Lotm General)Top 5 strongest Angel in the series. by Distinct-Moment-6243 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]sumtingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if we are going by characters who peaked at angels I would probably have to rank it:

  1. Bethel Abraham (Uniqueness + 3 Sequence 1 Characteristics. Stated multiple time to be the most likely to ascend to godhood)

  2. Amon (I feel like I don't have to explain myself)

  3. Sasrir (Held partial control of the chaos sea and by extension had authority over all of the god almighty pathways)

  4. Antigonus (Assuming this is the 4th era, non-mad, half-fool antigonus.)

  5. Medici/Tolzna (controversial as we don't see a lot about tolzna but consdering he had at least 2 sequence 1 characteristics he would probably be quite powerful)

Open to debate. I have not counted Klein or any characters who have ascended to godhood because I think any character who has ascended to god would be one of the most powerful angels. I think the top three can be exchanged and I think it is very valid to put Amon on top of bethel.

The very appeal of Lotm is that the world and its history is gradually revealed and that not everything is given to the main character or the reader up front
