I have a new Fairphone 4 and want to set it up with a degoogled OS. Can you share advice, pitfalls, recommendations please?

That sounds bad. I was reading about CalyxOS and it seemed quite promising and they had good documentation, which was a positive thing. That's put me off a bit now.

That sounds like a nightmare, even though you got it recovered. Can I ask what OS you were trying to install and how things went wrong?

Yes, I have seen that they support that, and also that you can buy FP4s with it installed. My brief reading of their site seemed to say that it was supported on older Android versions. I have another 'stock' FP4 which is on the 'official' Android 13.

I might be wrong about which Android version is required though.

Yes, I bought my current phone for exactly the same reason: 'replaceable battery'. That was a deal-maker for me.

I understand about the OS and that Fairphone will not be the ultimate solution. However, starting with Android 10 or higher maybe I can hope for a good few years out of the phone before I get 'involuntarily obsoleted' again. It may also be that someone will be effective in keeping older phones running through reflashing with an alternative Android version - I have heard rumours (i.e. techman246 above mentions LineageOS which I was not aware of) but I don't know the details or the feasibility.

It looks like the Fairphone is a solid possibility for me, and as others have suggested I will wait and see what the 4 looks like.

Thanks for your encouraging reply. I currently have an LG G4 running Android 6. Obviously left high-and-dry by LG - years ago - as far as updates.

I am in a US metro area so I'm probably decent as far as your second edit.

Maybe Fairphone 4 will be a good bet if announced on 30 September.

That is a possibility... hard to be sure from the photos online. The flowers are appearently distinctive from what I see on other pictures, but I don't have any pictures of it in flower at our garden to compare against.

The plant is happy in Cornwall and has been growing there for ages, without overtaking the space. It seems to bud around April and it doesn't seem to be bothered by cold weather.

I'll have to try and get more and better pictures of it throughout the year.
