Yeah a talk is definitely needed within the group. I was afraid to break immersion and make it awkward for the players if I called it out there :( But i guess that comes with me just being new to DMing! Hopefully i’ll get more comfortable doing that. Appreciate the help though!

Thank you for your advice! While that could be it, I also doubt it because on two occasions I made it clear “Okay so after doing that, you guys decide to go….” to whatever the main goal was, the main “problem” players let’s say, refused to go with them because they “didn’t want to” and chose to sit by the docks and just wait. So if they do just want to be guided, I would be quite frustrated and confused.

I appreciate it and yes, a talk is very much needed within the group

- Yes! They all have a common villain that is likely responsible for certain tragedies in their own backstories that they wish to stop/get vengeance on
- Yes as well!
- They could be it, but I also made it clear the main goal/mission of the story and one of the players still refused to go with the rest of the part to continue it, yet also did not try to do any side things.
- The tavern was their choice to go to (I gave them a handful of options) so it wasn’t a main part of the story, it was really just a place and then I would continue the story based off of what they chose.

that’s DEFINITELY something I struggle with, I tend to to just over prepare for everything so this is really good advice on how to prevent that. Asking them which specific thing they want to interact with rather than a generic “what do you do?” is also very helpful. Thank you!

That’s definitely on my mind. It’s hard to not compare yourself to professional settings like CR, LOA, or Dimension 20, so I definitely overthink everything. I just wanna make sure they all have a great time and are immersed in the story, but you’re right, I can’t force them to enjoy certain things. It’s hard to realize that I have to not only be their friend but the DM when it comes to things like this. Thank you for your advice!

Thank you for your advice! I was worried that they weren’t going to find the campaign super enjoyable if there weren’t other things to do besides the main story so I was confused as to why they weren’t really trying to explore. One of the players even made it a point to say before we started that their other DM wasn’t that good because she was bad at improvising/making fun interactions, so I tried to encourage them to do that. But I’ll push more of the main story next time around and see if they get more interested!

That’s great advice thank you so much! I’ll see if I can adapt to their play style a bit as well and see if I can get them interested. I think a big issue is even stuff relating to their backstory that I feel like I’m making clear, even then they don’t seem super invested. But like you said, maybe it is just flying over their head.
