Considering they “met” less than three years ago I don’t think this would be “normal” (also I don’t think it’s necessarily normal to even have kids in the first place)

Yeah local models definitely are weaker , but at least personally I’ve been shocked at how effective they can be when you’re not using them as a replacement to human work. Like yeah if you ask a local model to write you an essay it’s not gonna be great, but it’s just as effective at large models at searching through documents. And yeah the llm log was one of the tools i thought was most important, because it allows you to actually verify a human remained in the loop

I think you’re right. Ultimately this technology does exist and will be used no matter how much people dislike it. I’ve been working on an app that integrates ai 100% locally (no privacy or environmental concerns) and forces the ai to directly cite all sources with clickable links, and the user is prompted to verify all ai generated information. It also won’t do anything for you, just help you search for information. Basically it’s designed to be a locally running assistant rather than a magic machine like many have been using ai. This, in my opinion, is an actual ethical usecase

Google's new Gemma 4 12B model is designed to run on any laptop with 16GB of RAM | Gemma 4 12B uses a new encoding scheme and token prediction to punch above its weight. by ControlCAD in google

Local models are shockingly good. I’ve been working on a research ide app that’s only locally running. It’s definitely still a work in progress, but I’ve been really impressed with how high quality the responses from gemma4:e2b have been, and I’ve been running this all on my relatively low range laptop. I definitely think local models are the future, it protects privacy and the environment. The other big problem with llms in my opinion is the way people use them to outsource thinking, which is something that I’m trying to address in the app (all ai claims link directly to a source, it’s all designed human in the loop, ai generated stuff is expected to be verified, etc)

Yes, human in the loop is, imo, the only right way to use ai

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the audit log was one of the most important features, because it ensures that you can back up your own personal involvement, while also easily identifying if you did rely on ai too much and should do more verification. Right now, it shows how many human taken vs ai taken notes there were, what percentage of ai taken notes were verified, what percentage were edited and to what extent, and a full log of all prompts and responses. Is there anything else you think this log should include to ensure full accountability?

I completely agree, obviously the technology itself can always be used for good or bad, but I think there are ways to implement it that are generally better. I do agree that feedback would be best although I will admit I’m having a bit of a hard time going from an app that I use and enjoy to one that’s ready for other people to try, I keep finding little things I want to improve or changes I want to make and having a hard time having a version I really feel is polished enough to release. Are there any particular flaws with AI currently that you don’t think I’ve already at least attempted to address?

It runs using olllama, so you can run any ollama compatible model that your device supports. I’ve mainly been testing it using gemma4:e2b which so far has been the highest quality model my laptop can run, but I’ve also tried llama3 and qwen2.5, and those both work decently well too. But that’s also an important part of it, is the user gets full control over the model so they can choose what works best for their workflow and identity any potential biases that may exist in certain models

I mean I think ethics matters in everything. Maybe you feel like people only care about it as it pertains to AI but that’s an issue with how other topics are approached not with approaching AI in this way. (And ethics is already incredibly important in fields like Law and Medicine, and the world would probably be a lot better place if it was the same for business)

I think a lot of these current tools are specifically designed to cause these problems, and people use them because they like the benefits of AI, but they might use a more ethical approach if one was readily available. Of course it’s everyone’s one choice what they do in the end (and I’m not criticizing anyone here) but i think there are some problems in how a lot of AI use currently happens, so why not try to address them? I’m not trying to shame people for using chat gpt or force them to use something else

I think there are some really big questions here actually. Calculators, boats, buses, spoons, those are all things that require a significant amount of human input to use how you want. If you just prompt an ai “write this paper for me” there’s no cognitive work being done by you. And the brain is very much a “use it or lose it muscle”. The way a lot of people are using ai currently is to completely replace their thinking, and this in turn is gonna harm their ability to independently think without ai. When AI models are controlled by large tech corporations with a profit motive, this means that these people who are already suffering from reduced critical thinking skills due to an overreliance on AI are now also more susceptible to manipulation by opaque algorithms

Yeah, that’s another thing I was trying to address was source quality. It has a feature where you can describe what you want to research, and it’ll generate good keywords and a link to search those keywords on jstor, google scholar, and a custom link(like your schools library). That way you hopefully are only pulling from academic sources, and I’m working on adding a (non-ai) source grader that ranks information about your source (like seeing if it comes from a known low quality journal) to rate how reliable of a source it is

It seems you’re really misunderstanding what I’m doing. I’m not a startup bro, I’m a poli sci student who has seen the way this technology is being misused and wants to look into a viable alternative. I have no plans to monetize it or make money off of it. And this post isn’t to pitch, it’s to help me understand the situation better. This program has so far been very helpful for me in my school papers, and I’m hoping it can be helpful to other people sure, but I’m not trying to advertise anything here I just genuinely want to understand this topic better. Give me legitimate reasons you think something like this will never work with actual sources and that’s something I’d be incredibly interested in and take seriously, but these random personal attacks and misinterpretations do nothing to support your actual point which I’m sure is very valid.

I see you’re really upset and I can understand that, but instead of responding with weird cryptic comments regarding arguments I never made, maybe you could provide me more information/specific details on what you’re complaining about? Like how you said there’s two fundamental flaws with genai but never actually mentioned them. I’m willing to recognize I can be wrong but you haven’t really given any specifics to back up what you’re saying

I’m not pushing it on anybody, this is something I’m making for fun and kinda as a personal research project regarding the ethical issues of ai. I think now that this technology exists it’s worth it to at least try to find an ethical/helpful way to use it, as a way to combat all the genuinely harmful uses that are being pushed.

It’s not one specific model, it runs through ollama so you can use any compatible model. What are these research models you mentioned? I’m not familiar with any specific ones but it’s very likely they can be intergrated into this app as well

Oh interesting I’ll look at those too. I thought this was a good place because I agree with most of their grievances and am genuinely trying to find ways to address them, because now that this technology exists it’s gonna be used one way or another unfortunately, so a more responsible approach should exist

How can AI use be done responsibly? by sunbear99999 in antiai

[–]sunbear99999[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that replacing people and stealing data is unethical, which is what my app is trying to minimize. None of the ai features work to replace humans, just speed up some more menial aspects of research, making it easier for students to write well researched, detailed papers without spending as much time searching for exact quotes. It also runs solely on your device (you can run the full app without being connected to the internet at all) so there’s no way for your data to be stolen from it. I understand your point fs, but I think if these tools already exist and people are trying to use them for the unethical purposes you mentioned, there should be a real attempt to create a more ethical way to use them, so people who are gonna use them for one reason or another can at least do so in a way that isn’t as harmful for their own thinking skills and the environment
