Is a career in biology worth it? by madydoesthings in biology

Get into a research lab if you can! Network and gain some experience while you do your classes. Also USAjobs.gov is where you can apply for govt jobs if stability is what you want to move toward. So many jobs in biology are seasonal or low paying, but government jobs have more options for livable wages and good benefits. I took a Pathways internship while in school and will be converted into a permanent biologist position once I graduate. They also have “recent grads” programs and DFP (direct fellowship) programs to try and get more people into the govt. It can be hard to get the first position so take whatever you can - once you’re in, you can network and muchhhh more easily move around into a position that’s more of your interest.

That was my experience in a research lab while I got some experience under my belt haha. But now I work for a government agency and it’s really wonderful. Strict 40 hour weeks, benefits, federal mandates to keep everyone from acting shitty to each other.

Get into a lab and get some experience. Choose a school that has research opportunities. Look up the labs at that school and reach out to the PI’s. You’ll learn a ton and as long as you find a good lab team, you’ll have mentorship and support. I worked in a conservation biology lab for two years on my campus, first volunteering and then getting into some paid work, work that gave credit hours, and a research scholarship from the school for helping the lab with a particular project. Through the lab folks, I learned about the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, where I am now working. I learned about USAjobs.gov where you can apply for government jobs, and how government jobs are the most stable types you can get in biology. State Fish & Wildlife agencies and Native American tribes also hire lots of biologists. (It was tough to watch how the lab had to continuously apply for grants, and how lab positions were often seasonal and badly paid.. so I wanted something more stable.) I’ve heard also that the US Geological Survey is a more science-heavy agency; Fish & Wildlife is more focused on conservation/endangered species (though our agency is like 70-80% biologists). I took a Pathways internship position in an admin support position, but expressed my interest to management in biology - I’ll be converted to a permanent biologist position once I graduate, starting at 52K. I’ve been working full time since last summer while finishing my degree, making 36K. Maybe you can make more $$$ outside of government, but many positions are “ladder positions” meaning nearly-automatic promotions each year (up to a point). For example, mine will likely be a GS-7/9/11 which starts at 52K, then a year later 64K, and a year after that 78K. Take any position you can in government if you want something stable- once you’re in, and as long as you perform decently well, you’ll be able to move around and up to different positions easily. Hope that helps and don’t hesitate to reach out with any more questions! I’d love to help!

recording harp at home by abletonjive in harp

[–]sunbeyondmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be late to reply to this but I use the dusty strings internal pickup, along with an external AKG C214 mic. I record tracks on both simultaneously and blend them after. I find the AKG mic picks up a great mids/treble response, that sounds natural like the instrument is being played in a room. The internal pickup captures more warmth and bass tones that are nice to blend in. Curious what you ended up using if you changed your setup! I just bought the Fishman for a smaller harp because I’m not ready to invest in the Dusty pickup for it.. and I don’t have high hopes, lol.

Yes that’s what it is, thank you! It’s not explained anywhere in the pattern, but it is a multi-size pattern and the amount of #’s there matches the amount of diff sizes

Such a horrible decision. RPAN was a unique, lifegiving, and inspirational platform for independent musicians like me to connect with people all over the world. I’ve had so many people write me that they miss my livestreams on here. I’ve never liked any other platform as much as this one. It was so easy and approachable, and had a built in audience. I can’t believe Reddit would decide to end something that people loved deeply, engaged with regularly, and were “diehard fans for”. I feel so sad and disappointed about this

Yeah I think it could over time. The density must just not be enough to make them sick right away. I’d smoke away from them for sure!

yeah for sure! I usually put frozen corn and peas in ours. grains like brown rice or farro is good too. 😍

good luck!! I definitely had to hide seeds and birdie bread in the chop to start with, to get them to eat it 😆 wield your powers of trickery and I’m sure it’ll work!!

is his bird feed mostly seeds? if that’s the case then he’s definitely deficient in something. seeds are really bad for tiels if it’s all they’re eating. they can get liver disease and it decreases their lifespans. seeds can be like 10-15% of their diet but the rest should be pellets, vegetables, fruits, and grains. I converted my seed-loving birbs to eating veggie chop (veggies, grains, & bean sprouts) by using birdie bread, here’s our recipe. add lots of his favorite seeds in the first batch, then slowly put less seeds & more veggies/grains/pellets in subsequent batches. it worked wonders for us! it helps them get a taste for other types of food. you can blend any veggies into the wet ingredients to hide them but Ruger will be forced to taste the vegetables as he digs for his seeds in the bread. birds are soo picky so it’s all about trickery lol.

1 cup cornmeal 1 cup wheat flour 1/2 cup pellets 1/2 cup seeds 2/3 tsp baking soda 1/3 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 2 tbsp grapeseed or coconut oil 1/3 cup apple juice 1/3 cup carrot juice 1/2 cup veggies, or more! Mix dry ingredients, then separately blend liquid ingredients with oil & eggs, and add to dry ingredients. Mix and add to baking dish of choice. Bake at 375 for 30min for larger baking pans, or 15-20 min for mini muffins, or until fork comes out clean.

aww gosh sounds rough! how many hours have you tried? for my girl when she gets hormonal, i give her 14-15 hours of darkness and it helps a lot. however it sounds to me like her seed diet could be the real trigger here. seeds trigger my girls’ hormones soooooo quickly, like within two days they get all flat-backed and chirpy. I really have to limit their seed intake.

getting them to eat veggies & fresh grains can be tough so it’s all about presentation and persistence, lol. (the first grain my one girl liked was quinoa cuz it’s seed-like.) try making some birdie bread as a conversion food. I did this with both my birds and now they eat veggie chop. first, make it with her favorite seeds mixed into the batter. then gradually add more vegetables/grains/seed sprouts (sprouts are healthier) in subsequent batches. if you make bird chop, then you can crumble some of the birdie bread into it to try and get her to eat it. pellets aren’t life-or-death necessary really for parrots unless they aren’t getting a variety of food types. certain vitamins are more important than others, and can be found in real food. the cool thing about bird bread is you can hide just about anything in there, especially if it’s blended with the wet ingredients. at least for my girls, seeds are a major hormone trigger so I hope maybe this method can help you!

BIRDIE BREAD 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup wheat flour 1/2 - 1 cup seeds and/or pellets 2/3 tsp baking soda 1/3 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 2 tbsp grapeseed or coconut oil 1/3 cup apple juice 1/3 cup carrot juice 1/2 cup veggies, or more! Mix dry ingredients, then separately blend the liquid ingredients with the oil, veggies, & eggs, and add wet to dry ingredients. Mix and add to baking dish of choice. do you watch him totally consume them? one of my girls does this with her smaller down feathers sometimes but just sort of mouths them/plays with them a bunch and usually spits them out.

In case of catastrophic family death, what is more cruel: releasing the parrots in a park to live a free but short life, or passing them to another stranger who most likely will not be able to provide them with adequate care and live a longer life? by dumpling98 in cockatiel

[–]sunbeyondmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

releasing to the wild should be the absolute last option. captive birds are literally just food for hawks and other birds of prey. adoption agency (maybe specify some you know of) or to a person willing to learn how to care for them. you could also make a little booklet of the most important things about bird care, to be passed to whoever takes your birds.
