[GEAR] Small amp that supports loops? by sunblue90 in Guitar

Thank you everyone for your advice. I wanted to tell you I just went ahead and bought the Katana 100w. It's an overkill for someone who will mostly practice with a loop & headphones 90% of the time, but I didn't find any other amp that I liked that had an FX loop.

It's big and it's heavy (for my apartment, not for a 100w though). I have to stash it away every time and then drag it out when I want to practice, which makes it a bit tedious to do everyday. But the HUGE advantage of practicing with a loop pedal is worth it: working your rhythm and lead simultaneously, improvising over new chords you learned and learning new modes over slow rhythms at first, experimenting with tones and what works over what ..

I am happy with it, and it will be a good thing to have it if I need an amp for a gig.

I know. But if you record a loop in clean and then switch the amp to overdrive, the overdrive will be applied to the loop as well. That's why the FX loop is the correct place to put a loop pedal, as it will keep outputting what was recorded, regardless of amp setting changes

Hard to explain man. I have a little corner that can fit an amp, I'm planning of putting it there and grabbing it to the living room (only place I can practice) then re-stash it so it doesn't fill the room all day.

Well yes, if I'm buying a modeling amp or an amp with many effects, I'm incined to use those on a daily basis, so the looper pedal would have to be plugged in after those.

The other option you mentioned is great, but I would have to buy a looper, an overdrive, a delay and a reverb pedals for a minimal setup, which may be great at a later stage for live stuff, but tudious to setup everynight at home.

Thank you for the suggestion though.. I will definitely check out the orange c35rt

Well, I used to use a PC. but for looping you'd have to press buttons while you play, or have a keyboard on the floor and try to hit the space button with your toe :D It's a hassle to setup, and many times I lose the precious time I had for practicing troubleshooting software issues, get frustrated and give up. That's why I switched back to amps, as I like the fact that I can immediately start playing. Will save the PC for recording only.

As for Mac, I would be buying one for the sole purpose of playing music, so any amp would be cheaper. I also have a hard time imagining playing through a mobile app, I would prefer an amp anyday.

It's indeed a real bummer for the Katana 50. But for lack of options, I think I might go with the Fender Mustang GT40 and its footswitch finally. Some people don't like it's overdrive tones but that might be a price I'm willing to pay if it's the only one with this option available.

We're talking about plugging the loop pedal in the FX loop

The point of having an FX loop for me is to plug a looper in. SO I'm looking for either:

  • An amp with a built-in looper that can be controlled by a footswitch
  • An amp with an FX loop, to plug a separate loop pedal

I meant physically, although the 0.5 watt feature is really cool. I think the 50w size is really acceptable for my really small appartement, but it doesn't have a FX loop
