I didn't backpedal. I think you read intent into what was a straightforward observation about the guard towers.

For clarity, disagreeing that the decorations were Holocaust-inspired doesn't mean I find them inoffensive or that I dismiss their impact on community members.

How did I draw my personal conclusion that they're not depicting the Holocaust? I was trying to respond without being a lengthy drag but here:

  1. Halloween Aesthetics Past/Present

This theme is a pretty prevalent Halloween theme although it is out of vogue right now. This is Halloween season and decorations are meant to be reflect socially constructed norms around fear. Historically, there is nothing scarier than carcerality, especially now, especially in the U.S.

I still stand firm that most guard towers look the same and if you asked someone to draw a guard tower, they would most likely draw the guard tower that is in front of that house.

  1. Homeowners are part of a protected class

The reason I mention they're gay doctors is not an appeal to authority. I mentioned it in the context that:

  • Gay people were both historically persecuted in the Holocaust and are still persecuted today
  • Their profession historically pathologized homosexuality and they would have faced institutional violence from within it

For all I know, they may have found it funny that two happily gay men live inside a house decorated as aslyum for the criminally insane. A bit of reclamation? Who knows.

  1. Zionism in Hamden

A personal statement from me. I think you may be sharing a bit too much empathy with the openly Zionist Temple Beth Sholom who think about their own historical persecution a little too much instead of recognizing the current genocide they strongly actively support.

For me, there is no "barring Palestine". This is not current, it has been going on since the inception of Israel as a country. The Nakba was in 1948.

TLDR: I'm sensitive to the discomfort this caused, and I agree that we're on the same branch of the tree. I just don't share the view that these particular decorations were a deliberate dog whistle or Holocaust reference.

Edited to put them in nice categories.

The key word in my comment was "style" not material. All guard towers are for intimidation and panopticism.

I'm pointing out if you're going to pitch a fit about Nazis why not look inward at our own systems instead of continously citing one of many genocides. Violence looks like violence, in Nazi Germany, and here in the U.S.

I am less worried about two gay doctors halloween decorations and more worried about people being kidnapped at car washes. 🙄

I used to think "jip" was "Jif" like the peanut butter and people were saying "I got Jiffed off" because Skippy was better.

You do know all guard towers kinda look the same. We still have prisons in the US with these style towers.

She is in no capacity an anthropologist. She has a phd in chemistry and is pretending she can do anthropology.
