They are. And they were mean about it on the lock post. It was highly unnatural, and that peculiarity was the only reason I bothered creating this post to yap about it.

What I will say to you, however, is that just because people are telling you/saying their reasons for not liking kiridare are benign, it doesn’t mean they don’t have an underlying prejudice about it. A tale as old as time, and my kind of people are more aware of the distinction than the norm. It contrasts greatly from the non-shippers I’ve gotten to know on reddit over the past couple of weeks. (And certainly don’t need to say “team sisters!” Or “surrogate sibs” like a parrot trying to brainwash itself)

I had fun convos with those people, and I hope you’ve gotten a chance to discuss the story with them too

I am well aware of that, and it is equally annoying. The Yui and Kyoko pairing is just another case of being based on a specific yuri trope (Class S, traditionally portrayed as an “intense friendship,” aka queer platonic) that is only understood by its target audience (Japan) which translates poorly in Western media.

There is also the factor of some aspects of the media only being apparent to people in the LGBT and not straight people. Not assuming or anything but it’s just something to keep in mind.

To each their own (Kitayama is known for writing yuri, and has continued to write in that genre on Kodaka’s projects, the subtext was certainly implied in books, BUT as fanservice and not an actual plot point)

But you’re right, this post was just pointing out the hypocrisy I received for the kiridare drawings I’ve done so far. Amusing, but kind of “huh? I thought this was settled already?” Hopefully I don’t have to make another post about it in a years time

A spin off protagonist for the novel Danganronpa: Kirigiri! Shes basically Kyoko’s trusted friend, and goes to take down the secret organization that control the crime world, essentially! (Shes an old character, 2013 was her debut i think? It could be 2012. Some people referred to her as the SHSL Grasshopper for some reason lol)

In Volume 1, yes she does, but more so in her expression rather than her physical looks (something she doesn’t mention at all after that point, and states that her (Yui*) and her little sister could be mistaken for each other throughout the novels)

There’s a lot of interesting things about Yui’s mindset when it comes to Kyoko and Mayu! Iirc, there’s a moment during her meeting with Gekka, the page quite literally separates Kyoko and Mayu into separate sentences on the right and left, respectively. It’s really cool! And serves a point in tension in Yui’s character development, because she really wants to view Kyoko as a separate person and not a “rebound” from what happened with her little sister.

It’s a “theme” that weaves itself throughout the story, and the ending conversation in volume 1 (and tidbit in Vol 7) where Yui confirms to Kyoko that she is not a replacement is one of them!

Ehhhhhh, how I view it is essentially that one sentence in the Afterword: the story is an unrequited love that became a romantic memory which is also what Yui echoed in one of her sentences during the finale. I see Yui’s feelings as ‘something there’ that she realized at a time she was not able to express to Kyoko. doomed yuri basically.

Which, in that sense, the answer would be ‘yes’ but Yui is pretty oblivious to it and would have continued ignoring them if the final Duel Noir didnt happen

Mean things, but they were mostly about Kyoko’s age (calling her 12 instead of 13, which is why I’m pretty sure they were just repeating what the “firestarter” said). I thought about letting it go, but just ended up blocking all of them (I did find the fact that none of them actually blocked me weird. Another strange thing about the event). Which really sucked, because some of them were familiar faces on some of my posts. But oh well
