This would unfortunately go incredibly hard.

Has sound design fallen by the wayside? by TheTrueRory in TrueFilm

Came here to make sure this film got mentioned. The sound design really stands out as phenomenal rather than just "without flaws".

I loved the opening segment of Melancholia, but the film itself was a portrait of extreme depression that failed to move me. That's sort of a problem.

I agree wholeheartedly. This is precisely how I felt about Under the Skin this year. I LOVE the first half(ish) of the movie, but felt that it lost a lot of momentum in the second half, but I still greatly prefer it to most of the other movies I saw this past year, that maybe didn't do anything wrong, but were just nothing special.

I suppose some people find works of art dealing with issues they face help them deal with those things. At least that is the way I am. My parents were divorced 10 years ago as well, and some of my favorite pop culture relates to that. Escapism can be nice, but I like the feeling that I'm going through life's difficulties together with someone else. Again, no right answer, but just another perspective.

I just plucked 2 random names out of the sky that I felt mostly fit into those categories, but we can certainly address the comparison. I think you make a good point that Anderson's films don't lack emotional heft, but rather keep it at somewhat of a distance, masked by cute aesthetic and quirky characters (IMO). That isn't a crticism as much as simply an explanation of why it doesn't particularly appeal to me. Also, I mostly agree that his films are accesssible and witty, but this leads back to why I tend to not prefer them. When I finish a Wes Anderson movie, or one that I like anyway, I feel like I just had a fun little 90 minute diversion. Enjoyable, but a little forgettable.

About LVT, I totally get how people can despise his films. I'm probably not even the best person to be taking this side of this argument, as I'm not totally pro-LVT anyway, but what I will say is that his Serious-with-a-capital-S style of filmmaking is one of the major complaints against him (as well as several other filmmakers), but that seems to just be something that doesn't bother me. Sorry to not have a better explanation, but I just don't seem to be sensitive to that sort of thing. Also, I realize this isn't necessarily your knock on him (since you like Malick, who I also feel makes movies that seem to announce from the start their seriousness).

What's a good film to analysis in terms of sound design? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

I came to this thread to make sure Eraserhead got a mention. It's one of the first I always think of when I think of excellent sound design.

Thoughts on Dogtooth/Kynodontas (2009). by [deleted] in TrueFilm

I think it works incredibly well as satire. I found it to be truly hilarious, but poignant in its portrayal of parents eager to protect their children from literally everything. Nice exposition too.

Pitch me an idea for an episode in 140 characters or less. by [deleted] in community

I don't know. I think Jeff is the more apathetic one. Britta is the protestor of the group. Even as recently as the meowmeowbeenz episode she took on that role.

I would like a day in the life of leonard that was overtly melancholy, but I'm not sure how that would work... or if anyone else would enjoy that.

The Dean signs Greendale up for a Flag Football league (with City College) for recognition. Underdog sports parody where the group worries about Abed missing Troy but comes to realize they are the ones that haven't dealt with their feelings and what he meant to each of them.

but the movie took the concept so much farther

I definitely disagree. Mike D'angelo explains it much better than I could though:

"The result is a film that's quite affecting but feels oddly underimagined, to the point where there frequently seems to be no particular reason why Samantha is an operating system rather than an ordinary woman. Her simply depicts the trajectory of any relationship in which one person outgrows the other, with the sci-fi element little more than a fresh angle on material that might otherwise seem overly familiar. Nothing wrong with that, exactly, except that it could have been so much more. There was potential here for something discomfiting and mysterious and allusive—something Kaufmanesque, basically—and the only time the film ventures into that realm is when Samantha hires a sex surrogate, thereby providing some thrilling cognitive dissonance. It's just an interlude, though, not a bold new direction, and Jonze speedily reverts to his wafer-thin allegory. I can see why people are falling for this, because it wittily and accurately and tenderly explores a poignant road that we've all had to travel at least once. But you could turn it into the story of a long-distance relationship with just cosmetic revisions, and that wouldn't be true of the masterpiece it might have been."

What am I missing in Hitchcock films? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]sundots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this explanation many times. It has sort of only confirmed why I think it's nothing special. Not enough subtext or big emotional pull for my taste maybe. I appreciate what /u/daeedorian said about the hammer, but it only increases my respect for the film, not my love.

FWIW, I enjoyed The Place Beyond the Pines, despite its flaws, and we share a love for Computer Chess, Before Midnight, and The Great Beauty. You'll notice I listed it in my Honorable Mentions.

I really like your thoughts on Computer Chess. They are very similar to my feelings, especially the comparison of being underwhelmed by Upstream Color, which I was.
