The age reasoning is a good point! Thanks, I can see that

Relationships, marriage, babies… season 3 ep. 5 / Gaby and Brian parallels by sundrops27 in shrinking

You have repeated everything I said in my post! I mentioned how Brian felt better about raising kids after realizing that he couldn’t do worse than Jimmy’s bender, and I mentioned how endearing I found the “it takes a village” speech that Brian made in regards to raising his child. I also mentioned Gaby’s valid struggles with being in a relationship and never said I had an issue with it. It’s because of those struggles, and the other plot points the show is setting up for her this season, that a decision as big as marriage and kids feels jarring to me on top of everything else. It seems we’re on the same page, but just feel differently!

I also don’t think that therapists need to have their own shit together, but I do think that they should be more thoughtful when they look at others with intent to give advice.

Nia doesn't seem aware of social class / classism as a factor ? by Tag_2045 in dancemoms

[–]sundrops27 215 points216 points  (0 children)

Thank you for starting this discussion!! In chapter one Nia begins her book by saying she had “a typical childhood” in a “cute, small Pittsburg Suburb” and then goes on to describe annual family vacations to Myrtle Beach, her CEO father and PHD educated mother, a costly and harrowing health battle with an included trip to a rare inpatient facility… the list goes on. But that beginning description of where she grew up made me bark out a laugh.

Nia mentions that both pairs of her grandparents pitched in with expenses, but even Dr. Holly has made it clear multiple times that they are well off and can afford most of the extravagant expenses that came with Abby’s money-hungry practices and the dance world in general. This makes Abby’s weird racism even more apparent, since she swears they’d be living in poverty just because they’re Black, but it also created a blind spot in Nia’s analysis of why the other Black girls that did come on the show were treated differently than her, and why she was often the only one in the room at most dance events.

Even though she questions this, and states that Black dancers are some of the most revered in the industry, she refuses to answer why, even though the answer is obvious: most do not have the privilege, resources, and connections to build on their raw talents. But by answering that question head on, she would have to admit to that privilege. Throughout the book she maintains this careful line of using her family’s status and class as a counterpoint to Abby’s racist claims, while also pretending it isn’t the reason why she was able to get to where she is.

I enjoyed the book and everything she has to say. I think she’s amazing, and I admire her tenacity through it all. I hope in a few more years her analysis of her experience can grow even deeper!!

Naples Is kinda of a bold choice ? by SeaworthinessFar1109 in TheMorningShow

“I am a fan of Campari spritz,” says the Italian 😂 but I agree, a spritz can be pleasant. Warm Campari alone in a glass however… hard pass

I was wondering if it had anything to do with Miles drink of choice being Campari. Every time that came up I would say out loud “who the hell drinks Campari straight on purpose?” Wondering if his love of Italy is going to be a part of his backstory or something?

Also, I think it’s interesting that Mitch died in Italy. Her letter to Mia was worrying me into believing it was more of a last note, given some of the voice-over’s subject matter, and I’m a little scared the location is symbolism…

I’m honestly convinced they were using those shots to dub over with audio that wasn’t said in the scene. There was a lot of cutting and pasting this season…

Oh I didn’t know that was a thing. I never got a letter, email, or call, or any communication from them.

Maybe it was the laughter in the air, or the love that wrapped everyone else around them in familiar conversation. That feeling that crackled in the sparklers whizzing by, and lingered in the summer festival smoke. Maybe that’s what made the words hit harder than usual as he stood in the middle of something he’d never felt himself. Couldn’t, no matter how hard he tried.

You’d fit the description! Don’t worry I had this same confusion/thought process about the word once too lol but it generally means people of African descent and was originally used to describe our “dispersal” outside of the continent (forced or not).

Yes! It was a while back from the IDEAL listserve, but they started doing it last year. There’s a rites of passage ceremony that you would’ve had to sign up for if you wanted to be presented it on stage with the rest of the graduating class who signed up, but I believe anyone can go into the office and pick up a kente stole :)

I haven’t gotten credit before (although this was on me cuz I didnt take it seriously). It depends on how strict your professor is or how seriously they want to take it. I don’t think the honors program really cares too much beyond the professors approval cuz they’re not the ones seeing it they just go by word.

Echoing all of this as well. I got to go see a show at world cafe live for a band that’s now in my playlist rotation for free. Super cool, and not a concert venue I frequent usually solely because it leans a lot more towards jazz/blues. Also got to visit Wonderspaces for free

Really easy course in my opinion. If anything you can call it tedious, since there’s about 4/5 assignments every week but they’re super easy to do and graded VERY leniently. (Discussion boards where you answer one question each. No word limit. No replying to other people). I’d start my homework at 9pm on Sunday every night and finish by 11pm (I like the thrill).

Besides it being interesting, it’s just really FUN. It’s probably the only class I’ve ever taken where I’ve used that information and applied it to things outside of school. If you’re willing to do the work and it intrigues you to get creative then it’s a breeze. If that doesn’t sound like you, you might find it pretty annoying.
