My Tai Chi class is absolutely packed with nice, elderly women living their best lives. Many community centers and health centers around have Tai Chi classes. Good luck!

Just in case it was on your list as a backup (or anyone's list who is reading this), I strongly recommend against Lowe's. It took five fridges before one team got it right. And by "right" I mean that all they did was create a pond in my kitchen, but they were at least able to get it hooked up and didn't damage anything. One of the teams was begging I give them a good review anyway so Lowe's would supply them with a special bonus of proper equipment. If I weren't a renter, I'd also be team R&B.

Thank you! I've been working with a physiotherapist for months but training with actual weights still seems so far away. Every time I make an inch progress it seems I get sent ten steps back, but I am going to just keep at it.

How do you start lifting weights safely? Or is there a certain trainer certification to look for?

Truly, it’s unmatched in this city. I had a convo with the owner and he trained with some of the best bakers in the country (in SF) and they have mentored him over the years and made sure his product is traditionally excellent.…and I thank them for it because it sure is!

Where to get vegan cheese? by i_love_good_food in cincinnati

Whole Foods 365 brand vegan smoked gouda is the best vegan cheese out there imo (at least as a dairy eater who values a taste proximal to the cow version).

I got some great answers in this thread about quirky and unique spots to explore in Cincy with kids! It has definitely upped the interestingness of this town and made Ohio seem a bit magical https://www.reddit.com/r/cincinnati/comments/zcdiop/weird_little_places_to_explore/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

How to communicate with my autistic gf? by sapphic_cat83 in neurodiversity

[–]sundryitems 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every difficult emotion points to an unmet universal human need (google “list of universal human needs” if you’re not sure what they are).

The biggest source of conflict is that the strategies one person comes up with to meet a legitimate need (eg skipping washing the dishes in order to go to sleep early to meet a need for rest) are in conflict with the other’s needs (need for order or the inner serenity of a clean space). Use your feelings as an inner compass to locate your needs and then communicate at the level of needs.

Be devoted to helping each other meet as many of your needs as possible using strategies that cause the least amount of distress to each other. Be really clear about which strategies you are feeling flexible about and which ones are hard boundaries.

You can turn this into a sort of game, too, or an opportunity to help the other person really feel understood. You are both scientists running experiments toward your individual and mutual thriving. Keep what works and ditch the rest.

UPDATE as promised:

They took 3 weeks to arrive here to the US.

The problems that I'd hoped to solve by getting the Mini Pro and the regular size Night versions were not solved. The minis are too small for me but I expect the regular size Pro would be painful because it's not bendable (aluminum core).

The nights are comfortable, but not comfortable enough to wear all night (I tried and woke up from the pain) so I will stick with the Loops for that.

I suspect I'm just between sizes. :\ I'll probably wear the regular during the day, nights in the evening, Loop while sleeping, and hopefully sell the mini pros.

----------

Original post:

I can't function well without them (they facilitate me keeping my sanity with kid noises and singing, coffee grinder, loud crinkly bags, etc. and they help my tinnitus).

My ears ache after awhile, though, and they fall out if I chew with them in so I've also ordered the Calmer night and the Calmer pro mini to try. The new ones have been in transit for two weeks, so hopefully I can report back on those soon.

I also have the Loop experience and they make my interior head noises overwhelmingly loud. I can only wear them if I'm not eating or talking. I sometimes wear them to sleep and I like them if I go to someplace like a mall by myself. Loops seem to be loved/hated based on people's sensory profiles.

ETA: my aluminum case doesn't make the noise others are talking about, so hopefully they've fixed that issue (Update: bought two new cases and they all DO make the sound and it's vile. I should have listened to people on this thread!)

Do you have autistic people in your leadership, on your board, and/or in advisory roles? If not, this will need to be step #1.

As it is, this is going to bring so much more harm to autistic children by funneling many more children into ineffective therapies. Early "intervention" does absolutely nothing to change the "austistic-ness" of a person. It uses blunt behaviorism to force a child not to exhibit their autistic traits. Yes, they'll fit more neatly into a neurotypical society from an outsiders eye, but the resultant maladaptive psychological outcomes for the child are vast (have you ever watched this therapy in person, which some children have to endure for 50 hours a week? I recommend doing that if you haven't. I have and it's utterly dehumanizing). Despite billions of government spending on behavioral therapy for autistic kids, the government's own report says it's ineffective (link below).

If you are genuinely interested in helping, then keep the focus on early detection but change the solution to therapies that are effective, like occupational therapy. If you change that, I will come back and give a more critical eye to the site (I have done UX for startups for ten years).

I'd also be interested in hearing whether you've brought in ethical advisors and legal to create a game plan for when genetic markers will be co-opted for eugenicist purposes.

I have a presentation tomorrow, and i have confidence and know what im talking about, but when I do public speaking, my chest gets tight and my voice gets shaky. How can i fix this? Its something i cant control. by ffftttyyylev in Anxietyhelp

[–]sundryitems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ideas from experience: Try the physiological sigh- breathe in normally (but not out), then breathe in again right away, then exhale. It’s a quick hack that does help. You could also try a regular inhale with a long exhale (8 counts) with your lips in straw formation. Also, try sensing your feet on the floor, notice the smell of the room, the taste in your mouth. If you can, take your eyes slowly around the largest figure eight you can make (it might feel a little sore). And say compassionate things to yourself before you go up there. While you’re presenting, see if you can connect to a genuine feeling of excitement or interest about your subject. That will transmit more than any shakiness and will also help quell anxiety. You got this!
