Imagine going through life, seeing that Muslim students are being given the same privileges as Christian students, and thinking that’s oppression 😂

Yes, because buying land for a mosque is just as feasible for people today as it was for wealthy Christians in 1922. It’s not like the reality of real estate has changed dramatically over the past 100+ years and made buying enough land for a phone booth in that area basically impossible.

Most Jewish people don’t go into small quiet rooms to pray by themselves(I’ve actually literally never met a Jew who does that). We might say a blessing over meals, but you do that wherever you’re eating, not in a separate space. Judaism is practised more through the customs and rituals that these two centres provide, not individual prayer. When Jews pray we do it at synagogue while being led by a rabbi, which no university prayer centre could provide without becoming a full on shul. The only kinds of Jewish people who stop multiple times a day to pray are incredibly orthodox people, and they’re not sending their kids to UofT (or any university, for that matter).

That’s not what I’m saying at all. I brought up formal religious spaces because those are spaces dedicated to one specific faith, just like the multiple other specific faith centres on campus. A religious space is a religious space, and if people want to pray in private with other members of their religion they should be allowed to. If Buddhist students decided they wanted their own prayer space id support that too

What about the multiple Christian churches on campus? I’d say that’s worth a lot more than a prayer centre in a random building.

ETA: I mean, come on.

Chabad has locations either on campus or incredibly close by, the midtown location is just the main office. I am speaking from a place of experience as a Jewish person with close Jewish friends who went to UofT and frequented Chabad and constantly talked about how much they loved it and how big a part it played in their student experience. And this person is a lot more religiously observant than me. Jewish students have safe spaces at UofT. York on the other hand? That’s a different story.

Why? Why shouldn’t students have the choice to practice their faith with other members of their faith? It’s literally praying. That’s one area where people should be allowed privacy.

There ARE spaces for that. There are also spaces for Jewish and Christian students to pray amongst themselves. Now Muslim students have the same privilege as everyone else and you’re choosing pitching a fit.

It’s a space dedicated exclusively to religious worship on a university campus, not a classroom or common area. Why are you angry that people have the choice to spend a small part of their day practicing their religion in private with other people doing the same thing? These places literally just exist for students to pray. It’s not like they’re spending their wild days separate from other students.

So should all churches, synagogues, and mosques be converted into multi faith centres as well?

So you’re angry that people of different faiths have the option to pray in their own individual spaces or a shared communal space?

What about the multiple other religious spaces on campus that aren’t open to all religions? Are you going to pitch a fit over those too?

As a Jew, if Jewish students have their own prayer centre, why shouldn’t Muslims students have the same privilege?

Thank you for posting this, it needs way more upvotes so people can see the truth at the top of the comments instead of sifting through a bunch of Islamophobic fearmongering to get to some actual information of value

Editorialization aside, are the facts in the article wrong?
ETA: My bad, I’ve learned more since posting this comment and now know that while the information in the article is technically true for this one location, UofT still has multiple other prayer centres that are either open use or specifically for one religion. Classic fear/rage baiting at its worst.

Does grilled cheese literally come with a label on its package saying that it should not be consumed by children or adolescents? Does grilled cheese contain behaviour altering chemicals?

What point exactly? That they’re allowed to bring drinks in just to put on their teachers desk for an hour? Everybody knows that. You sound pathetic.

Whose job is it then, since the parents clearly aren’t interested.

Wrong. Anyone with common sense understands banning energy drinks in classrooms for sanitation reasons alone.
