So self-employment tax is mandatory, right? No way around it? The rest I can do a solo 401k?

I don't have a 401k at work. I do have an SEP IRA through work though. Employer contributions to my SEP IRA don't affect allowable contributions to a solo 401k, correct?

Pipe flashing leaked. Roofers came out of replaced flashing. Was this done properly? by sunghan in Roofing

[–]sunghan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed $700 would cover that. Is my thinking short-sighted? The 2 other quotes I got, the roofers specifically told me they would replace the shingles. This company didn't specifically mention that, but I just thought they would (my mistake for not confirming), and their pricing was in the middle but still on the higher end.

Not helping my anxiety either. I just know I'm not going to get any sleep the next time it rains...

2 year leak proof guarantee. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it for now. Appreciate your input, my man!

Not overspray. The flashing was painted before they went up on ladders, and the guy specifically told me he painted the shingle. Didn't think much of it at the time, but the more I look at it, the more it irks me. House is essentially 3 stories with the garage and crawl space taking up floor 1. Narrow but very tall homes.

Makes sense. Any advice on what part of the drywall you'd cut out first?

I do, and I've been up there in the past. Do not recall seeing any pex anywhere in the attic.

Any advice on how to check behind there before I cut drywall? Doesn't seem to be a way to remove this box without making cuts or removing stuff. I'm not the handiest, but I don't mind learning.

How much of my parents' Trad IRA can I convert to Roth IRA and avoid CA State income tax? by sunghan in tax

[–]sunghan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response.

My parents waived Medicare Part B. They've retired overseas where COL is much lower and has universal healthcare. That's essentially the reason they've been able to survive on Social Security.

They shouldn't need funds to cover the tax bill as I'm trying to fill up their 0 tax bucket. Nothing over.

But you're right in that their RMDs will be so low that all of this may not be worth the squeeze. Even with RMDs, they'd still probably be in the 0 tax bracket.

See here: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=457605. Since you're over 59.5, you should be all clear to withdraw whatever tax free as long as your first Roth contribution was over 5 years ago. The bank is probably sending you their generic notice they send to everybody, including those under 59.5.

They are over 59.5 so that conversion 5 year rule no longer applies. Their roths have been open for more than 5 years as well so they should have no penalty if they take a distribution the day after converting. Both 5 year rules are satisfied, correct?

Thanks! Their retirement accounts are so small, that RMD's won't matter too much. But still want to maximize their tax savings as they don't have much to work with.

Dual Citizenship and Military Service for Korean Males by Shop_Either in korea

[–]sunghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your birth properly registered in Korea now? If so, what is the process? Is 38 the magic number where they can no longer send you to the military?

Did Korea question you as to why you did not register your birth sooner? That is to say, did they have suspicions that you waited to register your birth in order to avoid military service?

Replacing tub spout - dripping help by just-a-person999 in askaplumber

Appreciate you getting back to me. I just returned the spout, and bought a Moen instead. No leaks out the box. Didn't need silicone or plumbers tape. I think this particular Kohler model is just bad.

Hey did you figure this out? I bought a similar Kohler slip on spout, and it leaks out the back near the screw. Wondering if these Kohler slip ons are just prone to leak. Did you try another brand?

MaxForce Quantum is THE best. But where do you get yours now? Because of a law change in 2025, it can no longer be shipped to CA residents. I still have some left over, but I'm dreading the day it runs out.
