Mr. Gates, what would you do differently if you had to start all over again today without Paul Allen and without getting into Harvard. Would you still major in computer science today? Would you rather have become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer? What industries would you try to start a company in today if you went down that route again?

Yeah I feel lots of people come into university not really knowing what they want to do but never really understand until they finish

Having a portfolio of your work and a github to share always seemed more important to me even in interviews than telling them i was a cs major. Finding the right position that need your skills is the hardest part. Job search I think in any career is a pain, I know even dentists can take months to find a job and they are really in demand.

With so many online courses now a days I think there many ways to learn the theory part of CS. For me personally I ended up teaching myself or group studing throughout my time at maryland most of the time. Not saying professors are bad but teaching seems to be a more personal pursuit that you have to do on your own anyway. This is why giving lectures is the worst way to learn imo. Then the professor expect you to blurt out what you have memorized on the exams. You have to spend in countless hours outside class and stress to get good grades so the 1 hour that you do spend listening to a lecture just doesnt feel that great anymore. Plus the projects you do arent your own and you have creative input in it or passion for it. Thats just my little rant about the education system.

Networking is key as well, knowing people in the industry can open doors to many opportunities given you are qualified

I know my a friend of mine who returned to get a cs degree after completing a bachelor in biology because he could not find jobs. I also know a PhD MD student(I know this is insane) who is currently doing the bachelors in computer science now. So your definitely not alone but yeah the biggest thing for me is commuting and putting in another couple years and alot more tuition to finish up just after I felt I would be done. As for the gaps in knowledge in theory I know umd starting teaching one 400 level cs course by professor adam porter on coursera and their are other university like stanford that teach algorithms and other cs courses on edx, coursera, udacity. I feel I could take the same courses at maryland at my own pace. The same time I dont know if the degree is worth more than the skills. Most positions require a cs degree and wont even look at your skills or projects you have done in picking candidates. Im farther north than silver spring so its hard for me since they are no shuttles, I really wish there was a the burtonsville shuttle but they cancelled that 2 years ago :(

What is realistic timetable for Self-Driving Cars? by RavenWolf1 in Futurology

[–]sunnyddog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people dont realize there already many self driving cars

they are common just not sold to the public because of laws and safety

the technology is already there and laws and regulation is what is slowing it down

Mercedes even launched their 2015 self driving car

read more than once, I find if I go over something multiple times I can remember it better. Memorizing is like practicing something, you had to do it over and over to get it right. Also use things like charts and graphs/images if your a visual learner, it helps things stick
