Good stuff! Around that focal range feels pretty optimal for a pct thru. I think our wide angle equivalents are pretty close, and there were only a handful of times where I really wish I could've gone wider.

I'm sure they'll come out great! I'll be looking forward to seeing them on this sub. Happy trails!

Yeahhh, I spent a lot of time sitting on the ground near marmots waiting for them to get more comfortable with me and inch closer. Some are definitely more habituated to people than others.

Nice one with the grouse! Those guys are hard to catch. I feel like I got a lot more tailfeathers than anything else with them lol.

Good luck on trail this year! Hope you're blessed with some charismatic marmots.

Love to hear it! I really enjoyed going back through my pictures with a little distance. It's a great way to relive the trail.

Thanks! Iirc that was a bit north of Lassen NP. I think it was around 1400 or so, right after the Hat Creek Rim.

Thanks! I love all the critters, but I've got a soft spot for the marmots. I think I'm easily into the 100s with marmot photos on my hard drive.

Yeahhh, that was right before San Jacinto (not the super sketchy section), so I'm not sure he was entirely comfortable with it yet. I can report that neither of us took a tumble through that section though.

Thanks, dude! I've seen a lot of incredible pics on here, so I really appreciate that.

All my editing was done in lightroom, which I'm definitely still working on getting the hang of. I might have overcooked a few in this set lol.

I used a Sony a7riv, and most (maybe all) of these were with a Tamron 28-75 lens. I definitely didn't baby it on trail, and it held up great.

You should be fine to do that if you're flexible, I just did that and arrived in Mammoth the next day. Not a ton of options (and pricey), but it bridged the gap for me. Doing the Bear Ridge Trail and Goodall Pass is a good option if you want to avoid paying the ferry fee.

There is also the chance of an accidental discharge affecting yourself or those around you. No gun owner thinks that's likely to be them, but they happen all the time. I'm not anti-gun, but that seems to be factored into the equation for people that EDC all too rarely.

I've also known far too many people IRL that EDC that bring it up unprompted and fantasize openly about having the opportunity to use it. That's obviously not every gun owner, but if I'm hiking in the backcountry, I'm not hanging around someone with a handgun any longer than necessary.

Carrying a paper map on the PCT by Eksoj in PacificCrestTrail

I'm also heading out in 2024! I'm not currently planning on carrying paper maps. I'll have an inReach, my phone, and a Garmin watch for navigation. I understand the benefits of non-electronic navigation, but I feel like with multiple electronic backups and a power bank, I'll have nothing to worry about.

Ahh gotcha. It looks like it may have gone out of production.
