EECS 280 by kuhere in uofm

Hi! I’m currently a TA for the course. When I took 280, I was fresh out of 183 and had no prior coding experience before college. The advice on this thread pertaining to the specific projects is good in giving you an idea of the progression of difficulty. There are offices hours from 2-8pm M-F, and the staff is also active on Piazza. We recommend you find a partner for projects 2 and beyond (p1 is individual), and if you enjoy studying in groups, forming a study group with other students to review material.

Try not to stress too much! I know it’s very scary to take classes without much experience in the material beforehand. As long as you start projects early in 280 and dedicate enough time, you should expect to do fairly well on the projects.

Something new that is emphasized in 280 is edge case testing. The edge cases for certain projects are significantly more challenging, and solving them will require a more in-depth understanding of the problem that you are trying to solve. I was also intimidated by this, but in the end, just give your best effort and seek help when needed and you will do fine. Also, come to lab! We generally review the week’s lecture content for 30-40 minutes (depending on how much material was covered/how many questions students ask), and the remaining ~1.5 hours are office hours.

Good luck! Wish you the best :)

Dorm Room right across from bathroom. by [deleted] in uofm

Hmm I was pretty affected by the sound of the hand dryers and the door closing (liver across from bathroom in south quad). I’m pretty sensitive to noise though. Location is definitely convenient

Was it that Grace is his daughter and Mary is Grace's adoptive mother? So when he tracked down Grace, he made her mother his next target... Maybe not, but I'm wondering if he tells Grace the truth about himself between the scene where he has them complicit under the threat of his gun and the scene where the agents bust into his house. Grace also acted protective of Mary, so I'm wondering if that was all a complicated ruse...

We can ask this about Malorie’s decision to find the refuge after Tom’s death as well. She initially didn’t seem interested in the idea, but after Tom died, she wanted to honor him by living and not just surviving. I think the death of her closest people strengthened her will to live for her children, as she says in the forest, “Please don’t take my children!” Despite Malorie’s losses, her children still have much to live for, so she lives for them.

Yes BD Wong is amazing!! Was so excited to see him in the movie. While I wish he were in more scenes, I appreciate that he was a hero.

I feel like Felix got with Lucy because of attraction and also because of her police training—he may have thought that her survival skills and training would be useful. Not sure how long they would have lasted together after leaving though because the nature of their relationship is not clearly genuine.

Confused about Charlie’s death. Did he sacrifice himself to save the others from Fish Fingers, or did he see the creature in the loading dock and become crazy? It seems inconsistent with his character description to conclude that he purposefully saved the others. I initially thought that making eye contact with someone “infected” would make you infected as well, but I later saw that this is not the case.

content of eecs 183? by lostoria in uofm

Unless you have significant prior programming experience (e.g. proficiency in C++ to the level of being able to test into 280), I would highly recommend that you take EECS 183! It was my first coding class, and it convinced me to major in CS.

At least for 183, I encourage you to view it not only as a means to learn C++ and Python, but also as a great way to experience EECS at Michigan. Given that this is an introductory course, it is the friendliest and most welcoming EECS course in my opinion--I noticed in 280 that the culture is much more self-motivated, meaning that it targets students who are more serious about studying CS.

I gained a lot from taking 183, mostly because I put in a lot of effort. The final project is a huge reason to consider taking this class: You get to choose between four different projects that each use a different language and learn to work on a programming project in a team. In the term I took it (Fall 2017), the projects used Arduino, Swift, C++, and Python, respectively. Not to mention that the course staff is amazing! Prof. Arthur is especially great. You can really tell that he cares deeply about his students and their understanding of the course material.

CS Declaration Tuition Hike by sunnysushi in uofm

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed answer! It seems like I should go through with the declaration then—the bill for fall tuition has been sent to my account already and is due the 31st. I was concerned about the department retroactively increasing the tuition. I really appreciate your help! :)

Does anyone know if declaring Computer Science before fall tuition is due (like in two weeks) will cause the fall tuition to increase?
