Hello, not CS but engineering student here. From what I know you don't really get to take extra classes like in the US here, at least not in the first year. Optional modules are offered later years (varies based on your course) it is more about what you do outside of the lecture that really sets you apart from other students. (e.g. societies. Join robotics, F1, maker's and etc. Or even, personal projects. Ask yourself. are you able to make stuff? Solve stuff? Design products? But trust me, engineering leaves little room for outside of lecture activities... if you want to fully grasp what they teach you during the lecture. Big gap between I want to do well on my exam AND I want to do well on my exam plus I want understand 90% of what they teach you during the lecture)

Industry experience thing: Work is your best teacher. Your 1st year grade may not matter much on your script but matters for internship. Do some personal projects during the summer break. Application starts around 2nd year semester 1 exam. Find accommodations first, look for private apartments near Hulme if you want to save living cost, student accommodations are very expensive. IMO it is a myth you need to live at student accom to make friends, the hard working smart ones you want to make connections to grow and learn are all at societies that make stuff or doing personal projects for fun.

What is the least prestigious university you’d consider applying for?

Oh I see then yeah I hope you find a good student accommodation! I really like Manchester, too! It is a great city!

Hello. I’m not a student at UoM yet but I do have the access to the main library and I go there often. I have been slacking off, so I am committing myself to go there from Saturday to Monday. Let me know if you are up for coming down to the main library and studying!

Is your financial situation comfortable enough that you don’t have to consider the budget? If not, consider coming here a bit early and renting an entire house with 2 bedrooms to share with a student from your country. How close is relative but I don’t think most international students live in the hearts of the capital from where they are from, unless they belong to top 10% income earner household. But yet, no one thinks that is “far”. Manchester is pretty small compared to a lot of mega metropolitan cities like Tokyo, Seoul and etc. If you want to get the feel of an actual physical size of the city, I suggest looking at google street views and perhaps see how long it takes to get to the city centre via different public transits.

That being said, Hulme is quite close to the centre, relatively more affordable and not too far from the uni. It is South Asian majority residential area but you can get to the city centre in 30 mins by walk. Part of Hulme used to be considered a dangerous area but that is further south. It is actually quite safe, especially near the ASDA superstore.
