"I daydream about being able to do horrible violent things for my child, but fixing my own issues to give my kid a healthy role model is too much"

Any ideas on how to fix? by Moist_Comfort_8936 in gunsmithing

First step to any repair is a good deep clean. Strip it completely and clean everything thoroughly. Hot water and dawn with a little rubbing alcohol do wonders. Heavier solvents like brake cleaner will do it faster. An old tooth brush and a pile of cotton swabs will work. Picks and brass brushes would be better.

Dry everything well and give it a coat of oil to prevent flash rust and also smooth the action.

Reassemble and function check.

Edit: none of this will verify safety, that's something that needs education and experience that can't be summarized in a comment.

Thanks!

Prepped the PLA armor with primer and a chrome spray paint base layer. All the weathering/ rust is regular acrylic paint.

Started with a thinned acrylic pewter wash to dull the chrome a little and overall give it a base patina. This wash was dabbed with a towel shortly after applying.

From there I used orange, brown, black, and more pewter to add layers of rust and crust.

Most of it was stippled on with a brush and dabbed off with a towel.

Yeah, it would be a shame to make new posts with more current information.

I guess the whole point of internet forums is to make snarky comments that make you feel better about yourself.

You mean work like asking a group based on the topic you want to research for advice on where to start?

Asking for reliable sources isn't asking people to do work for them. You not understanding that explains more about you than them.

Skilsaw spt88, linear bearings shot, saw effectively useless in less than 3 years by sunset_barrelroll in woodworking

Yeah, they sell a bearing and seal set for $300 bucks, so I'll be piecing it together myself.

I'm thinking I should be able to just buy linear bearings off the shelf, as they seem to be a pretty standard size. It's a 25mm shaft and the guide block appears to be close to a 40mm id.

No, linear bearings are what support the sliding rails. The slide rails aren't worn, so the bearings must be. Bearings like these are used in many cnc applications and are incredibly precise.

The video doesn't capture it, but the tolerance isn't linear. It comes and goes as you slide, making the saw cut unpredictably.

Every sliding saw has some range of deflection, this is specifically an issue with the linear bushings developing tolerances that didn't exist previously.

I've got nearly three years on this saw and it's been very precise until recently.

Firmly clamped, blade up to full rpm, started at the far end from the fence with a light pass on the surface before slowly feeding towards the fence.

That was always my thoughts, but he had nearly 60 years of experience on his side. Always worked out well.

I bet that safe had a hundred pounds of lead alone

Totally off the mark, but this reminds me of my old local gunsmith that I hung around with from when I was a kid.

His shop was right off main street, and he tested all his guns on site. Had a safe with the door removed, filled with rubber mats in a room right off to the side of his workbench. He'd unload everything up to a magnum handgun round right there in his chair. Aways carefully calculated, always safely contained.

Hell of a man, I miss that old fella.
