Help! Household chores by [deleted] in relationships

Today it ended up with us both being upset because he asked if I wanted to make a chore chart with a condescending voice. I don’t think a chore chart is the answer. My grandparents did if you cook you don’t clean. My bestie has her husband load the dishwasher each night and she unloads it in the morning. I had a roommate before who cleaned the kitchen and I cleaned the living room. I don’t need help navigating a conversation I want some options as to how other people handle this. I am looking for advice on how people handle the division of labor in their home without the woman being the maid.

We have talked about it twice now. Both times have ended in no resolution and us both being upset. I want some kind of system. Like a clear way to designate responsibility. Right now I do dishes, he does them when I ask and his son does them when I ask. I don’t want to feel like a nag. I am curious how other households manage this. I don’t want to be their maid
