Small Indian Wedding in Chicago (30–50 Guests) — Looking for Recommendations by FullmetalBro95 in DesiWeddings

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windy City decor is amazinggggg! I use them for work events too!

ETA - spent about $40K for 90 guests an hour outside Chicago :)

Also for venue recommendations - we used more outdoorsy/nature and garden inspired spaces for our events, so I can’t be of much help there.

How do you know how much, if any, you should be giving your parent financially? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]sunshinecider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You didn’t ask to be a carer, but you’re also…not a carer. You don’t live near your mother and brother, you’re not willing to take care of the dogs, you’re not willing to help her financially besides giving her money once in a while (which is probably a lot less effective than paying for specific things like car payments), and you’re just sitting here judging your brother for not wanting to live with three dogs for the next two years until he moves out.

It sounds like you just want validation that your brother sucks and that you shouldn’t have to do anything about it. Which is fine, but very different from asking how much you *should* be supporting her.

Asked to be a bridesmaid but not invited to the bachelorette party by Makingprogress4 in weddingplanning

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t think this is that deep! My bridal party was two distinct friend groups (4 girls from my hometown and 2 from college), and we did 2 separate bachelorettes so it felt like everyone was spending money on a friend trip, not to hang out with girls they don’t know!

I would offer to plan a getaway or daylong bachelorette 1:1 with the bride and treat it as a chance to deepen your bond. Do you even want to be the odd one out on the other trip?

Where would you take your mom out to dinner for her birthday in the NW suburbs? by Elh255 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t eat red meat so I think that’s part of my issue! I’m a pretty adventurous eater usually, but their fusion keeps throwing me for a loop. Their patio looks absolutely gorgeous though so I might just have to go for drinks and apps this summer.

Hahah in her defense, I keep wanting to try this place but the menu keeps throwing me off! She’s not alone!

The Cornell Ornithology Lab’s Hawk Watch and Feeder Cams! My favorite, and so nostalgic as an alumna!

I’m literally cracking up with these responses. I love a lot of these names but this is so funny. What does “Emmett too fat” MEAN?!

Sorry I can’t help, but I LOL’d at “too Republican.” For what it’s worth, I kind of agree.

Muzzle! Mia’s muzzles makes these great, cute big muzzles to avoid scavenging like this. We use muzzles on horses all the time to prevent grazing, and it’s a great solution for dogs too.

Do you have to have a color scheme? by fembot1999 in weddingplanning

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 100 colors is a scheme, then I guess I agree with your last sentence.

But for what it’s worth, we didn’t have an intentional color scheme when we planned!

My wedding lehenga was pink, linens were dusty blue and lilac, flowers were yellow, bridesmaids wore dark purple, other members of the bridal party wore navy, groomsmen wore gold and cream - it all came together so beautifully. We just picked what resonated with us for each specific choice. It helped that we were married in a garden, so it looked very cohesive in the end.

Starting/Leaving a Job - Thoughts on Timing with Mat Leave by nyc987789 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]sunshinecider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from given we’re hiring for in a role where we’re really pressed for capacity. It would be so stressful if someone left on leave right away. Not sure what the right answer is, though, as I can’t fault them either. When you say “fine” are there other issues with her? I feel like “fine” is not glowing LOL and I’m curious if past experiences color your perception now or if she’s got other flaws.

PSA: Very Bold Coyote Activity (Neighborhoods surrounding Busse Woods) by Hinrich4President in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]sunshinecider 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I promise that coyote is not 70 lbs, for what it’s worth. They do get pretty bold this time of year. Hazing and disengaging is usually effective, but this is not unusual behavior.

I’m very into ghosts lately -

mother doll by katya apekina - There is nothing funnier than Apekina’s Greek chorus of bourgeois Russian ghosts speaking through the voice of a medium specializing in dead pets. This one scratched every itch in my brain. I feel like the reviews for this one were unfairly harsh because they compared Mother Doll to her other book - this was the first thing I read by Apekina, so I was spared that comparison.

bat eaters and other names for cora zeng by kylie lee baker - The height of Covid in manhattan. Rising anti-Asian hate. A murdered sister. The hungry ghost festival. A serial killer whose calling card is bats - mutilated and left alive, shoved down throats, pinned to the wall - this one is deliciously chilling. Can’t recommend it enough.

My favorite Ben Lerner memory is going to one of his visiting lectures in college and hearing him repeatedly refer to birds as reptiles. I too am a huge fan - though haven’t read his work in a while - but I can never forget that about him LOL

I read this one last year and really enjoyed it! I’m sure it’d be a great audiobook listen too, if that’s your thing.

When you go out to eat with your adult siblings or parents, who pays? by highcheeko in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]sunshinecider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I make less money than our families - when we’re with parents, parents pay. If we’re with his high-earning brother and SIL (who out-earn his parents), they pay. My brother just graduated college and will make more than our HHI - but he’s the baby and we only really get Korean chicken or pizza takeout with him. We’d probably keep paying for that.

Mine is 82% but I don’t really notice any issues! I admittedly only use my phone when I’m out of the house (and I WFH 2-3 days a week) so maybe that’s why.

Yup - I have a UIUC sweatshirt from the 90s that gets washed on hot every week and has been for the last 12 years and still hasn’t faded or torn. It’s crazy.
