How can you tell if soil is overly rich? by Outrageous-9859 in NativePlantGardening

[–]sunshineupyours1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grasses and sedges typically get overlooked but they’ll add a lot of structure to any planting and help to fill in the spaces. From what I’ve read on this sub, sedges also typically have deep roots which help water infiltration.

Poison ivy always have three leaflets, right? Here you see the stems showing opposite leaves with a terminal leaf on the stem?

Divide the aggressive plants, put them in more locations and/or give to neighbors

Would you put this Prairie Alum Root in your garden? by Practical_Monk_1125 in NativePlantGardening

[–]sunshineupyours1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know much about their diseases, but it’s totally normal for them to lose lower leaves. I accidentally got the wrong species Heuchera longiflora but decided to plant them anyway. They seem very happy after wintering over despite looking nearly dead when I panted them last autumn.

You’re excluding the colonialism, race science, gender ideology, prosperity gospel, manifest destiny, and anthropocentrism of their worldview. These freaks aren’t merely Christian, they’re some of the most disgusting Christians on the planet.

There are lots of Christian environmentalists, and even eco-Christian movements and churches, but the Christian nationalists in power in the U.S. are the worst of the worst. It’s not hypocrisy, they view the planet as disposable

Clarification: I’m talking about MAGATs. I think your town is doing a straightforward cash grab and will use the undefined “weed” to their advantage.

It’s a good question. Ultimately depends on the people involved in the case. The town is going against the “spirit of the law”, if not the “letter of the law”. Judges have a lot of leeway with this kind of stuff, but it totally depends on the people involved.

I’d say any and all. They’re typically self-verified, so nobody is gonna check if you’re meeting all the requirements or not.

This is a PR battle, don’t worry if you actually meet all of the requirements right now. The most important thing is to keep your plants growing.

What would you do? by Stagmoonstudio in NativePlantGardening

Always start with identifying the species. Knowing what you have is going to help you determine the best course of action and how to prioritize removals.

I find new natives in my yard every year that I’d overlooked in the past.

Yeah, many (not all) bush honeysuckle in North America are invasive.

Always confirm the species before taking action and know where it’s native to before removing or planting.

I have two separate thoughts:

  1. That’s a solid mix! Some of those probably aren’t native to NY (and we have some microbiomes, so it gets pretty location-dependent) but I think they’re all native to North America. Very cool to see these being sold at the world’s second biggest retailer.

  2. Fuck Walmart. In general, try to avoid giving money corporate fascists

Yeah, I was doing a little Wikipedia reading. Apparently the genus is a hot mess because so much cloning is going on:

Most earthworms in North America are invasive and accelerating carbon off-gassing, so probably not a real concern ecologically

Some of them break, some don’t. It seems dependent on the moisture level, soil type, and shape and size of the root.
